Blog - 13th May

Hello everyone,

Another fun and enjoyable week in Apple class. This week we've been exploring planting and growing and using our green fingers to help in our garden.

We've planted our very own sunflowers and discussed what's needed for a plant to grow. Many children knew that a plant needed, soil, water and sunlight to grow. We are going to observe the sunflowers over the next two weeks and watch them change from a seed to a shoot etc before letting them go home in the last week of this half term.

We've also been sequencing the steps of how to grow a plant - first by putting soil into a pot, and then adding a seed and then putting in a sprinkle of water and finally putting the pot somewhere not too hot and not too cold but where it will get some sunshine.

The children have also had great fun using ipads and designing and making their own Spring picture! They've used appropriate colours and used their imagination to explore different techniques to get a finish product that they love. These will be going on display in our classroom before coming home.

We've also had a go at speaking with our hands this week (Makaton) - the signs that we have mainly focused on are 'hello' 'friends' 'please' and 'thank you.' The children have really enjoyed this and have been using the please and thank you sign within their play! You may wish to practise these at home too! I've attatched the links below:

Next week were going to be learning all about minibeasts and insects - with a surprise visitor coming in on Friday! To help us build bug hotels and minibeasts shelters please can I ask for you to bring in some junk modelling materials (cardboard cereal boxes, yoghurt pots, milk bottle lids, kitchen roll tubes etc.) We're also on the look out for anything shiny! We unfortunately can't take any toilet roll tubes for hygiene reasons!

In our Musical Apples sessions this week we watched a video of butterflies. We noticed how elegant and silent they were as they flew from flower to flower. We got our the glockenspiels and had a go at playing very quietly to match their movement. We discovered that we could play the notes one after another or we could slide up and down the notes - we loved this sound!

Have a lovely weekend! Fingers crossed that we see the heatwave that everyone's talking about!
