Blog Week ending 15.07.22

What a hot week it has been this week!

The children have managed so well with end of term tiredness coupled with the hot weather and although it is sad that the end is in sight for our children in Pear Class, it is clear that they are now ready for the new adventures that Year 1 will bring.

We have been assessing the children again during our RWInc sessions so that next year we are able to group the children so that they may continue to progress at their own rate  -you will hear more about these new groups in September when RWInc begins again in Year 1.

In our maths work this week we have been focusing further on the language equal to. The children have been introduced to the cuisinaire rods. Cuisenaire rods are a versatile collection of rectangular rods of 10 colours with each colour representing a different length. The shortest rod, the white is 1 centimeter long and the longest rod, the orange is 10 centimetres long. The challenge for this week was for the children to identify two rods that were equal in length to mine. It is often an easier task when using concrete resources for the children to be able to physically place the rods side by side so they can see the ones they need, but it is a trickier task for them to be able to explain their reasoning. We will continue to work on the concept of equal to within our maths provision next week.

In our topic work we have continued on with our jungle adventure. Excitingly, we had a teacher from further up the school come into our classroom to work with us this week; Mrs Chambers from Sycamore. Mrs Horne-Smith brought in a large suitcase and we had a great time sorting the items Mrs Chambers would like to take on her jungle adventure and the items we thought Mrs Horne-Smith would need to take on a seaside adventure. There was lots of fantastic reasoning and discussion about the different items as we considered the differences in the two habitats. The children helped to consolidate their understanding of our key vocabulary, discussing how even though the jungle would be very hot, Mrs Chambers may need a rain jacket because it gets very hot and very wet in the jungle because it is tropical. They were able to identify that some of the colourful items of clothing in the suitcase would not be suitable in the jungle as Mrs Chambers would need to wear colours that blend in with the forest to help her to camouflage and hide from predators.

Alongside this, we made jungle hats, jungle binoculars and enjoyed producing some independent writing based around a picture of the jungle habitat. We look forward to sharing lots of pictures with you next week of our last week in Reception and of the fun we have during sports day.

Please check back in next week for our final blog, but we would just like to say a big thank you to all of you for your support this year. With your help the children have made huge progress this Reception year and we have had all had so much fun along the way!

We will see you at sports day Monday!
