Blog Week ending 28/1/22

What a lovely week we've had in Pear class this week!  We've all been working so hard and done some amazing teamwork throughout the week.

Please remember to check the Numicon Challenge tab to see what this weeks challenge is and don't forget to upload onto the school 360 app for us to see how your child is getting on!

RWInc this week has been a continuation of Ditty reading. We have read the story Sit. We are getting really good at working with our RWInc partners and taking our time to learn how to track the sounds in the words together as we read. We're really enjoying using our lollysticks!  Have you tried using lollysticks at home to help track the sounds?  It is important that as we read with the child we do not just focus on phonic decoding and segmenting, but also comprehension of the story. As you do the home Ditties with your child if they are finding it too difficult reading the story, read alongside them and discuss what has happened in the story.  After this, then go back and choose a word and see if they are able to Fred talk and blend it. It can sometimes be easier for the children to do this once they know the context of the story.

In our number work this week we have focussed on the number 6 and the number 7.  We have thought about how much these numbers are and done lots of practical activities to represent these numbers.  We have looked at different ways we can represent 6 and ways to represent 7.   We looked at how traditional dice patterns show numbers to 6 and enjoyed playing some games with them.

If you have any board games (like Ludo or Snakes & Ladders) that use dice, why don't you have a go at playing these at home.  Look at the different numbers on the dice and make sure we are moving one square for each number as we count.

We've also had lots of fun writing these numbers.  We've used these rhymes to help us remember how to form them:

Down we go and make a loop, Number six makes a hoop.

Across the sky and down from heaven, That's the way we make a seven.

In topic this week we have been thinking about the wonders of Winter.  We have revisited our learning about hibernation, thinking about the different dens that our local wildlife make for themselves to keep safe and warm during the winter months for their long sleep. We have started to look for changes in our environment that shows us the changing season of winter. We took turns to use the IPADS to record some of these changes in pictures and collected some winter items to investigate together back in the classroom.

Although we have not yet experienced the extreme cold weather found in Antarctica such as snow and ice, we have noticed the temperature has changed, the trees are bare and wildlife is hiding to keep warm over these frosty months. We started to think about the clothing we wear during the season of winter and why we wear these things – like the hibernating animals we need to keep safe and warm because cold temperatures can be dangerous for us also. We decided that we would like to go on a winter adventure to Antarctica and so we packed some items in our suitcase that we felt we would need.

In our maths work on measure we have been looking at comparing weights.  We had lots of fun using the balance scales to show which toy was the heaviest and which was the lightest.  Baking together and measure the ingredients out is a great way for children to learn about measuring and weighing in everyday life so why not try baking some delicious treats together at home?

In PE, we have been looking at travelling, such as crawling, hopping, marching, skipping, jumping, running, walking backwards.  We had lots of fun playing different games to develop our gross motor skills and use our bodies in different ways to travel.

At the end of the week we have had a lovely time in our PSHE session.  We have been thinking about not giving up when things are tricky and helping each other.  As a class, we have talked about setting goals and we all shared something that we find a bit difficult but that we want to get better at.

Have a lovely weekend and we'll see you all next week.
