Blog Week ending 3/12/21
Christmas has well and truly begun in Pear Class!
This week we have decorated our classroom; changing our home corner into a Christmas Post Office and decorating our class tree. We have had the Christmas songs on loud and have started to learn a special little Christmas performance that we will be sharing with you soon, watch this space…
Our RWInc sounds this week have been ‘qu’, ‘x’ and ‘ng’.
‘qu’ – Round the queen’s head, up past her earrings and down her hair
‘x’ – Down the arm and leg and repeat the other side
‘ng’ – Thing on a string
The children have been continuing to practice their Fred talk within RWInc provision as well as practicing our red words. We appreciate all of the home reading – it is really paying off and many children who were unable to blend are starting to be able to. We have noticed however that the children are not retaining red words.
This week we will be sending home the red word books. These books contain three red words initially. Please work on these words over the next week. Please then include them in your child’s book and return them with their reading books on Tuesday/ Wednesdays so that we can check progress. Once you are confident that your child knows them all we will check this and add some more to be worked on. Please don’t worry if it takes several weeks for your child to learn the first three, but we would really appreciate it if you could work on them little and often. Add them to their bedroom doors as the ‘password’ to get in for example. Try to make learning them as fun as possible and use them in context in your everyday conversation.
In our maths work this week we have been consolidating our learning from the last term on number representation and composition to 5 as well as working on our number formation. I have included some number formation worksheets to work on at home – practice, practice, practice!
Our topic this week concentrated around the celebration of Christmas as we used our small world nativity scene to retell the story of Christmas. The children enjoyed re-telling the story to each other and creating stables for Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and the animals. We had some wonderful conversations about our own family Christmas traditions – we have learnt there are some very cheeky Elves around this month and the children have been very excited telling us all about the mischief they have been up to!
I was very impressed with our writing development this week, as the children used their sound knowledge and our classroom sound mats to write their own letter to Santa asking very politely for a present for themselves or their family. We are looking forward to a trip to the local Post Office next week to deliver our letters and the children will hopefully receive a reply from Santa!
Later in the week we have continued to think about Christmas and the journey to Bethlehem. We've enjoyed creating decorations for our classroom and it's beginning to look very festive! We've also been busy creating and wrapping presents to put under our Christmas tree or post in our Christmas Post Office. In PSHE, we have thought about how we can make friends with people and how to be a good friend. There were some lovely ideas being shared; some of us even made presents for our friends or people who are special to us and we labelled them to go under the tree.
As we've been looking at shapes over the last few weeks, we went on a very exciting Shape Hunt around school. We were able to spot lots of different 2d and 3d shapes in our environment and had fun giving clues to each other. Maybe you could go on a shape hunt around your home or where you live?
