Head Teacher's blog 20.09.21

19th September 2021

Well, we’re really feeling back into the swing of things!  School was busy and buzzing last week – just as it should be!

We are always keen to hear feedback from parents and hope that you continue to feel consulted in matters of importance to school life.  We have used many ways to collect your opinions and thoughts over the years but currently, Google Forms seems to be a quick and accessible way to do this.  With this in mind, we’ll be contacting parents/carers of new starters very soon to collect your views on how your child has been welcomed and is settling into our school.  Then, throughout the year, we’ll continue to collect ‘parent voice’ from all year groups on key aspects of school life. Of course, at any time, you are free to fill in a parent view form on the Ofsted website.

The Northumberland county council portal for secondary school places is now open and all parents/carers of current Year 6 pupils should log on and complete this application if they require a place at The Duchess Community High School for September 2022.  Please note that each year, we always have a few parents who miss this and it can be a stressful few days when a place has to be applied for after the portal closes. Here is the link you need to apply for a place. You will need to register as a new user if you haven't used the portal before. If you require any further support with this, please do get in touch.

Further details of transition plans, including open day events will be communicated from DCHS soon.  It is likely however, that events will be virtual for the time being.

A reminder that music lessons start this week.  Mrs Nicklen will be with us on Wednesday for violin, clarinet and recorder lessons. If you already have an instrument, don’t forget to bring it in.  If you have requested to borrow a clarinet or violin, this will be waiting for you. Please note that we are unable to lend out spare recorders at the moment so be sure your child has theirs with them!  Miss Hewison will be in school on Thursday for piano, singing and cello lessons. Again, she will have cellos waiting for new starters. We’re really looking forward to hearing music making coming from the Studio on these days.

We have Michelle Fowler coming into school on Thursday and Friday this week to take individual photos. We are sorry that we will not be able to accommodate family photos on this occasion. We also know that some children have PE on these days. We will try to organise the class rota with this in mind but if there are any changes to your child's PE days, we will be in touch early in the week.

We are currently experiencing a little bit of difficulty in the school kitchen as we are awaiting delivery of a replacement for one of our freezers. We do not anticipate that there will be any major disruption to service but it may be necessary to make small adaptations to the published menu in the next few weeks. Please bear with us!

There has been such a lot of hard work in school this week but the following children have really excelled: Jaxon Mc, Willow O, Rohan R, Oliver W, Una M-W, Amelia L, Cillian G, Emmie K, Hallie W, Emily D, Courtney A and Luke B. Thank you for your hard work - an e-certificate will be winging its way to you this week.

Wishing everyone a good week.

Bye for now,

Mrs Smith and Mrs Grimes
