Home Learning 06.07.20 - Week 13

Week 13 - Home Learning - Rowan Class Blog

Hi Rowan Class!

I hope you are all keeping well and have had a good week.

Last week’s ‘Star of the Week’ certificate was awarded to Tom for great effort and attitude towards all maths tasks this week. Well done, Tom!

This week for Home Learning, there is work for this week as well as for the following week to take you up to school closing on Wednesday 15th July. This means this will be the last blog of this school year. As this week’s blog covers a week and a half of learning, you have English, Maths, Science and Humanities work to complete. I will be asking you to submit your spooky descriptive writing. Remember, if you need help with ANY of your Home Learning tasks or have ANY queries, just send me an email using your school360 email account. I do enjoy hearing from you and I am always here to help! My email address is: jacqueline.oconnell1@school360.co.uk (don’t forget the ‘1’!).

As always, I have explained below each of your tasks for this week and then the resources you need are either in your work packs or attached at the bottom of the page.

Have a great last week and a half of school and a wonderful summer break – let’s hope the weather picks up again and make sure you rest and recharge your batteries ready for September.

Take care,

Mrs O’Connell

Work to submit this week:

This week, I would like you to submit your English written work by Tuesday 14th July.  I will then provide each of you with some personal feedback. Please send your work to me where possible, using your School360 email address.

English (06.07.20 - 15.07.20): - These tasks are for all children who have not returned to school.

Reading Activities:

To complete the reading activities, you will need your Home Learning booklet as you will be reading Chapters 16 and 20 of Goodnight Mister Tom and then completing activities based on what you read. At the bottom of the blog, there are four reading PowerPoints that will take you through step-by-step what you need to do. The writing task will be based on Chapter 20, so it will help you to complete all of the reading first.

Writing Activities:

You are going to write a descriptive piece about a spooky setting of your choice. At the bottom of the blog, there are two PowerPoints that again take you through what you need to do.

Please submit your spooky writing to Mrs O’Connell by Tuesday 14th July.

Year 5s who have access to Reading Plus, please remember that you should be completing 5 activities on it per week.

Year 5 Spelling Tasks:

Year 5 have been set up with an online spelling programme, where your spellings are broken up into syllables and there are lots of games for you to practise before you complete your test online. You have each been given a username and password (in your new packs). You can practise by playing the games as many times as you want. Remember, you MUST take the test before Monday 13th July.

Year 6 (not returning to school) Spelling Tasks:

Please look up the definitions of the following words and then write a sentence using each word, correctly and in context:

It would be great if someone could then test you on your spellings each week. Remember to keep a record of your scores and challenge yourself to do the best you can

Maths (06.07.20 - 15.07.20) - These tasks are for the children in Rowan and Larch that are working from home.

Lesson 1 - Reading and Interpreting Scales

Lesson 2 - Unit Conversions

Lesson 3 - Units of Time

I would like you to work your way through the three PowerPoints attached, carefully reading the information on the slides and answering the interactive questions on a piece of paper.

You’ll notice that there aren’t any independent activities at the end of the first PowerPoint this week, (Lesson 1 - Reading and Interpreting Scales), the aim of this PowerPoint is to make sure that you can confidently read scales in preparation for the interactive questions and activities in PowerPoint 2.

Once you have completed PowerPoint 1, move on to PowerPoint 2, completing the warm-up and interactive questions. You’ll then be ready to complete the independent activities detailed at the end of PowerPoint 2.

To find your independent activities, please turn to page 17 (Metric Units) in your maths work pack, this is your starting point for this week. You then need to carefully work through your maths work pack to page 22.

PowerPoint 3 is a standalone lesson that can be completed before or after the above work. It contains a selection of interactive questions and also details your independent activity which you can find on pages 23 - 24 in your maths work pack.

In addition to the above lessons, I would also like you to complete:

- Arithmetic: Practice Test 3 / Questions 1 to 18 (In new work pack)

- Big Maths: Skills Check 11 (In new work pack)

- Schofield and Sims: Complete the next two pages in your book

- Times Table Rockstars: Garage Challenge = 10 Games
