Homework and Spellings

This page is designed to help keep you updated on your child's homework and spellings for the week. Children in Chestnut Class copy down their new spellings on a Monday and are then tested on them the following Monday by putting them into sentences.

Your child should be practising their spellings at least three times over the course of the week, but in addition to homework and spellings, we also ask that you regularly read with your child and help them to learn their multiplication tables up to 12 (and the associated division facts).

There are also games, activities and worksheets for all subjects available to help your child on our virtual learning platform, School 360 (https://school360.co.uk/login1/index.php).

Over the last two weeks we have been developing our place value skills in maths by reading, writing comparing and ordering numbers to 1000. We found the concept of 'Number Sequences' a little challenging last week, finding it difficult to count on and back in steps of constant size.
The children have therefore been given a worksheet activity as their homework to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of this. Please encourage your child to present their homework neatly and to take care with their number formation.

Children also have their guided reading books to read in preparation for their session with Liz on Wednesday and their times tables to keep learning.

Last week we spent two of our maths lessons learning about 'Column Addition', the written method for adding numbers together. We used this formal method to add both two digit and three digit numbers. Sometimes we had to 'carry' numbers over in to the next column and this was a little tricky at times so our homework this week will focus upon this. Hopefully with a little bit more practise we will become secure in our understanding of this written method.

Children should continue to learn their times tables and associated division facts each week.

Over the last few weeks we have been learning about the formal, written methods used for calculating. The children are becoming much more confident with both the column addition and column subtraction method, the challenge now is to remember which method is used for which calculation! Their homework task is therefore a mixed addition / subtraction calculation activity this week.

As you will all be aware, there are many different written methods for calculating. I will therefore be including a step-by-step prompt sheet this week with the children's homework to serve as a reminder for the children, and also to show you how they have been learning to calculate in their maths lessons.

Children should also continue to read their guided reading book, school library book as well as  learn their times tables and associated division facts each week.

Welcome back Chestnut Class, I hope you’ve all had a relaxing break and are feeling fully recharged..., I think it’s going to be another busy half term so hold on tight!

Activity
Before the holidays, we had been learning how to punctuate direct speech correctly. The children looked at how inverted commas were positioned around the words being spoken and how a capital letter needed to be used to indicate that a piece of speech had started. We also began to explore how different pieces of punctuation (! ? ,) could be used at the end of a piece of speech as long as it was positioned within the inverted commas.

As well as revisiting all of this in class this week, the children’s homework is also being used to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of punctuating direct speech. One activity is to be completed on the worksheet whilst the other is to be written on the lined paper provided (please see worksheet for details).

Children should continue to read their guided reading book, school library book as well as  learn their times tables and associated division facts each week.

This week we will continue to explore how our written work can be made even more detailed by using a range of 'conjunctions' to join and extend our sentences. We will be using FANBOYS to help us remember the seven different conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So. The children will be given a homework sheet with a range of conjunction-based activities to complete. Please encourage your child to pay particular attention to their spellings and handwriting when completing their homework as well.

Children should continue to read their guided reading book in preparation for their session with Liz on Wednesday, read their school library book as well as  learn their times tables and associated division facts each week.

We have enjoyed reading Oliver Twist in class over the last couple of weeks as part of our English work. We've spent a lot of time discussing the different events and characters and also exploring the fact that 'When we read we find things out...'. The children have been given a reading comprehension activity for their homework this week so that they can show you just how much they do understand from their reading. They will need to answer the comprehension questions on the paper provided and write in full sentences, not forgetting their full stops, capital letters and neat, joined handwriting.

Children should continue to read their guided reading book in preparation for their session with Liz on Wednesday, read their school library book as well as  learn their times tables and associated division facts each week.

Children in Year 3 and 4 will also have their song words to learn for our panto, Snow White and the Seven Jockeys.

We have all worked very hard this term to learn written methods for all four operations in maths. To make sure that we don't forget how to use them, the children's homework this week is a mixed calculations challenge. Please encourage your child to use the formal written methods that we have been using in class either on their homework sheet or on a spare piece of paper as their workings-out are just as important as their answers.

Children should also continue to read their guided reading book, however due to our panto performance on Wednesday afternoon, there will be no sessions with Liz this week.

Week Commencing: Monday 18th December

I'm sure you'll agree that the children worked so hard last week preparing for their panto that they deserve a break! We've decided to get in to the Christmas spirit in Year 3 and 4 and not set any homework this week.

The children in Chestnut Class will however have a guided reading session with Liz this week as they missed their last one due to the panto performance on Wednesday afternoon. To ensure that the children continue to read over the Christmas break, Liz will set each group a number of pages to read in preparation for their session the first week back.

Any questions, please just come and see me or feel free to contact me via E.Mail.

Have a lovely Christmas!

Maths: It is important that we continue to encourage the children to learn their times tables on a weekly basis. By the end of Year 3, children are expected to be able to quickly recall their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables as well as the associated division facts. To ensure that the children continue to be exposed to some times tables work over the next few weeks, they have been set an Easter-themed, multiplication colouring challenge as one of their homework tasks.

Reading: In addition to reading their Guided Reading books over the next few weeks, the children have also been given an Easter-themed comprehension challenge this week where they will need to read a given set of instructions in order to create a specific egg design.

Guided Reading: Guided Reading with Liz will take place on Wednesday afternoon this week so please ensure that your child has read the required pages in preparation for this. Monday 16th April - Monday 23rd April

Welcome back everyone, I hope you've all had a lovely break and have managed to escape the rain for at least one day of the holidays. Typically, we begin our first week back at school with a 'mini-heatwave'!

Homework Activities

English: We will be starting a new unit of work in English this week and learning all about the language and organisational features of instructions and explanation texts. The children will be introduced to the importance of 'imperative verbs', (bossy verbs) when writing sets of instructions. Their homework task will be to draw upon their knowledge of instruction texts from this weeks English lessons and use it to write a set of instructions for making a sandwich. They will need to make sure that their instructions are short and to the point as well as ensure that they include imperative verbs.

Guided Reading: Guided Reading with Liz will take place on Thursday afternoons this half term as we will now be learning how to play the clarinet on a Wednesday afternoon! Please ensure that your child has read the required pages in preparation for their session with Liz. Also, please continue to encourage your child to spend some time discussing what they have found out from their reading with an adult each week as this is really helping them to organise their new knowledge and understanding.

Homework Activities

Maths: It is important that we continue to expose the children to 'arithmetic' based work in Maths, particularly when our daily lessons begin to cover fractions, shapes and statistics for blocks of up to three weeks at a time. For this reason, the children's homework this week is based upon the written methods used in school to calculate. The children should be encouraged to show their workings out and this can just be completed on their homework page alongside the relevant questions. ** Due to this homework sheet not being given out until Tuesday 24th April, I am more than happy for children to hand it in a day later than normal, this being Tuesday 1st May.

Guided Reading: As mentioned last week, guided Reading will take place on Thursday afternoons this half term as we will now be learning how to play the clarinet on a Wednesday afternoon! Please ensure that your child has read the required pages in preparation for their session with Liz. Also, please continue to encourage your child to spend some time discussing what they have found out from their reading with an adult each week as this is really helping them to organise their new knowledge and understanding.

Homework Activities

English: We had great fun last week in our English lessons as we carried out a range of Science investigations and then wrote precise instructions for each of them! This week we are moving on to looking at 'Explanation Texts' and the key features within them. To help the children with this, their homework this week is to explore both the use of, and range of, 'time conjunctions' (after, when, while, until, once...). This will help to prepare them for planning and writing their own explanation text.

Homework Activities

Maths: Last week we explored the relationship between fractions and decimals and also started to calculate fractions of numbers and quantities. To ensure that the children are secure in their understanding of these areas, their homework this week is a selection of revision activities for these two important areas of the maths curriculum. Both activities can be completed on the sheet this week.

Homework Activities
We have been kindly invited by Willowburn Sports Centre to join their Bird Box Design Competition. This week’s homework task therefore requires the children to be as creative as possible as they design a bright and colourful home for birds on the template page provided.

One overall winner will be selected from each participating school, each of these winners will then be given a bird box in which to put their design on before having it carefully placed in the grounds of Willowburn Sports Centre. All of the winning bird box designs will then be entered into a grand final where prizes can be won for use within schools, these include: wild bird feeding stations, wild bird feeders and a mixture of different wild bird foods.

Guided Reading: Guided Reading will take place on Thursday afternoon this week. Please ensure that your child has read the required pages in preparation for their session with Liz.

Homework Activities

Maths: This week, we will begin a new unit of work that explores the concept of 'time'. We will start with lots of rhymes and songs to help us remember those tricky facts, including the number of weeks and days in a year, the number of days in each month as well as the correct order of the different months! Following half term, we will then progress to reading and writing times from analogue and digital clocks. This weeks homework task focuses on securing the children's ability to read and interpret calendars as well as remembering all the tricky facts associated with periods of time.

Guided Reading: Guided Reading will take place on Thursday afternoon this week as we have our final clarinet lesson on Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has read the required pages in preparation for their session with Liz and has discussed them with you in order to secure their understanding.
