Learning Week 11: 22nd of June - 29th of June

Home learning 22nd of June - 29th of June

Hi everyone,

Hope this week finds you all well and ready for another week of home learning as well as enjoying the sunshine which is forecast. Thank you for all the work you continue to do and for taking the time to send some of it through. You should all continue to feel very proud of yourselves! As you know, I am now in school full time so I won't always be on hand to reply to emails straight away. However, I will check my emails daily so I can reply to any queries and respond to work. Children may find some tasks a little more challenging. It's not the same for any of us when we're not learning together as a class. Let me reassure you that you are all doing your best and that the time you have had away from school will be very much taken into consideration come September; not only in terms of education but emotional and mental health as well. If any area of learning is found to be very difficult, just let me know rather than trying to press on with it. If you have had a go, that's good enough for me!

Stay well and keep smiling everyone!

MATHS

ACTIVITY 1:

This week, we are moving on to working with 'tenths'. Tenths just means that we are dividing by ten. Below is a power point which introduces you to tenths and counting in tenths. take a look at this before you begin the worksheets. Remember last week, we looked at the two parts of a fraction - the numerator and denominator. The denominator is the number which is 'down under' and the numerator goes on top. you will also remember that when the numerator is the same as the denominator, that makes 1 whole. Therefore

Clip Art: Labeled Fractions: 10 10/10 Ten Tenths B&W I abcteach ...   is the same as 1 whole.

** You will notice below that I have added worksheets on halves and quarters. Some of you may want to have a go at these as well before doing the work on 'tenths' but you don't have to. However, if you feel you need a bit of a refresher on halves and quarters, it would be a good idea to take a look.

ACTIVITY 2:

 Year 3 and 4 - Spring - Block 4 - Fractions & Decimals

The next worksheet takes you to counting in tenths. The number line above, shows you how tenths are represented on a number line. Parts of this worksheet take you beyond 1 whole which means there will be more than ten tenths. If you find these parts of the worksheets tricky, don't worry about it! You can either give it a go or just leave those parts. Checking the answers and thinking them through when you are finished will help you understand any parts you found a little tricky.

ACTIVITY 3:

Complete your next 'Big Maths' Worksheet. If you have any queries about any of the questions, just email me and I can help out. You should have received your new Big Maths sheets in your packs.

ACTIVITY 4:

This week, complete another 3 Times Tables Rockstars sheets. In your new packs, you will see that each week has three sessions. You will also see that some weeks focus on individual facts such as just the 3, 4 or 8 times tables where as some weeks have a mixed facts focus. I suggest you begin with the individual times table facts so you can build up your confidence to the mixed facts sheets but that is just a suggestion. You can also jump on to the Times Tables Rockstars website where you can practise online and complete the 10 Garage Bands Sessions. At the end of the week, I'll look to see who has been on Rockstars and give more school 360 points out.

ACTIVITY 5:

I know that some of you will have finished or be coming to the end of your Schoffield and Sims maths booklet whereas others will still have plenty to do. If you still have pages to complete, then just continue to work through the calculations at your own pace but I will also set a maths assignment on Busy Things too for every one to do. This week's task is called 'Counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10' and there is also 'Counting in Multiples of 3 and 4'. These can be found in 'Assignments'. Feel free to do both activities.

ENGLISH

ACTIVITY 1:

READING ACTIVITY:

Reading is such an important life skill so it's crucial to set some time aside in your day to enjoy reading; whether it be by yourself, with an adult, your dog or even reading to a favourite cuddly toy! Reading can take so many forms - magazines, comics, newspapers, recipes, stories, non-fiction books... the list could go on! Listening to stories can be great fun too. I've been listening to more stories on 'Elevenses with the World of David Walliams'. As well as building up reading fluency, reading can help us learn more about the world we live in, stories take us to different places and imaginary worlds and what’s more...reading makes you an even better writer!

This reading activity is based on whatever story book you are reading at the minute or have read recently. Choose one activity, two or all three. Feel free to send any of it to me.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF!! SUM UP WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR IN THE STORY USING NO MORE THAN 20 WORDS.

READ A NON-FICTION BOOK RECENTLY? WHAT FACTS WERE YOU MOST IMPRESSED WITH?

COMPLETE A COMPREHENSION FROM YOUR LEARNING PACK.

ACTIVITY 2

This week’s spelling, punctuation and grammar focus is 'Using commas to list'. First read the snippet of text 'The Homing Parrot' (p.85) and then complete the activity sheet which goes with it. The activity sheet you need is number 86 or 87 depending on which one you have in your pack.

ACTIVITY 3:

Spellings: Think about the spelling group you were in when at school. These are the spellings you are focusing on this week. As well as doing the 'look, say, cover, write, approach', why not write them in different colours, in different letter styles (wobbly, bubble), small letters, big letter or why not time yourself to see how quickly you can write them all or how many times you can write one word in 30 seconds!

Group 1 Group 2 group 3
February water tube
forward again cube
fruit half tune
grammar money rude
group Mr duke
guard Mrs use
guard parents cute
guide Christmas mule
heard breath huge
heart build fume

Set 1 spellings are statutory spellings for Year 3. These are words we should become confident in spelling within Year 3 and 4.

Set 2 Most of these spellings are common exception words. They are not words for which phonics 'doesn't work', but they may be exceptions to spelling rules, or words which use a particular combination of letters to represent sound patterns in a unique way.

Set 3 spellings

Magic (or silent) ‘e’ makes the vowel ‘u' say its name (long vowel sound).

ACTIVITY 4:

@ EMAIL THIS ACTIVITY SO I CAN READ ALL ABOUT YOUR NEW BUSINESS VENTURE!

Your effort with persuasive leaflets, fliers and power points last week was fantastic. Thank you for that!

Following on from last week's activity, if you could open a new business in the area you live in (to make it an even better place to live!) what would it be? What service or products would you provide? Your idea can be as creative as you like! It would be a good idea to make a rough plan and some notes of what your new business venture would include. You might even doodle some little pictures. Then I would like you to describe it to me. In your description, I would like you have a go at using commas to list and awesome adjectives. Below is a description for my new business venture.

If I were to open a new business, it would be in an old, tall building filled with winding staircases. It would sell a wide variety of books, art supplies, gifts, cakes and drinks.  My business would interest all family members: children, parents and grandparents alike. I suppose it would be a little bit like Barter Books in some ways as people could come in and spend time reading books as well as buying them! I would bring artists in who would give art workshops in weaving, drawing and painting. The inside of the building would be filled with all sorts of warm colours like reds, oranges, browns and yellows - a bit like autumn leaves. Families could spend hours in it whilst they explore, learn and create!

ACTIVITY 5

Now you have your new business venture idea, create an eye-catching poster to launch its opening day! Think about the style of writing you would use to advertise the name of it. Could you use a snappy slogan to grab the reader's attention. Think about using a question to make the reader think and a guarantee of what they will get or the experience they will have. Use images as well as text to really sell your new business venture. You could create this poster by hand, use Google Slides or power point. Below, I have attached some examples of posters which advertise businesses to give you some ideas.

GEOGRAPHY

@ PLEASE EMAIL THIS ACTIVITY SO I CAN SEE HOW YOU ARE GETTING ON WITH 'INVESTIGATING COASTS'.

As part of our Geography unit, we are moving on to 'Investigating Coasts'. In this first lesson, we are going to look at what coasts are and how they are formed.

First of all, what do you think a coast is? Have you been to a coast? Where was it and what was it like? Take a look at the first few maps on the attached power point. Would you be able to locate the coast or coasts you have been to on a map?

Take a look through the rest of the slides. Coast are in a constant state of change. Some areas are being worn away ( erosion landforms) and some are being built up ( depositional landforms). Depositional is a big word isn't it! In the word 'depositional' you can see the word 'deposit' which can mean 'to put or set down in a certain place' That is what has happened with depositional landforms. The sediment and rocks have been transported by the water and wind, put down and then they have built up!

For this activity, go  to Google Maps or something similar and use the 'satellite' view. Zoom in to coastal areas such as the cliffs of Dover, Brighton's shingle beaches and the sandy beach at Blackpool. How do you think these coastal areas have been formed? Have an explore and play about on Google Maps!

When you are ready, see if you can answer the questions on the attached 'Investigating Coasts' Sheet 1B . Use Google maps to help you by typing in the names of the different places and finding the answers by zooming in on each place. Also attached are some photos of different coasts, a UK map and some coastal cards with a word bank ( sheet 1A) where you can describe how the different coast were formed. You could do some research as well as use the word bank in helping you describe the formations.

PLEASE DON'T FEEL YOU NEED TO DO BOTH ACTIVITIES ( 1A & B). JUST DO ONE OR THE OTHER UNLESS YOU REALLY WANT TO DO BOTH! IF YOU WOULD JUST LIKE TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND DIAGRAMS ON LAND FORMATIONS AND PRESENT IT IN ANOTHER WAY, THAT IS FINE TOO.

Have fun,

Mrs Smith
