Learning Week 2 - 30th March - 6th April

Recommended work for week commencing 30.3.20:

Hi all,

Hope everybody is continuing to stay well and positive through our time at home. It's been lovely to see that some of you have tried out Frog play and I've had some great Freya and the Goblins letters too which I have enjoyed reading. This new way of working is going to take a little bit of getting used to - for you and me! The most important thing is that everybody stays safe, well and as happy as we can be at the moment - keep smiling! A top tip from me is to do some work when you can but play, have fun and enjoy the time with your family. Here are some activities that you could also try out in this time at home:
  • Read, read, read!
  • Teach your child to sew or knit.
  • Draw and paint.
  • Colour in.
  • Do a jigsaw puzzle.
  • Help to cook/bake something super tasty: weighing ingredients is a great way to apply maths skills.
  • Dance to videos like 'Just Dance' on YouTube.
  • Sing some songs.
  • Keep a diary or make a scrapbook.
  • Write or record a review about a film or TV programme they have seen, or a book they have read.
  • Build something awesome out of Lego or junk.
  • Keep active and exercise!
  • Carry out an experiment (https://theimaginationtree.com/science-experiments-for-kids/)
  • Do a bit of gardening.
  • A lot of you enjoyed yoga when we did it in P.E. There are some great online sessions.
  • There are some fun science experiments available on this site -  https://telusworldofscienceedmonton.ca/explore/experiences/science-home/
  • Google Arts and Culture will allow you to take virtual tours of museums and galleries as well as perhaps give you some inspiration for art activities  - https://artsandculture.google.com/

Spelling Rule for Group 1 & 2
Group 1 & 2 will be looking at common homophones over the next couple of weeks. Homophones are words which are pronounced the same but have a different meaning. Sometimes homophones are spelled the same as well but still have a different meaning.
All groups could have a go at writing your words in sentences.

Spelling Rule for Group 3

A

‘oa’ is used at the start of a few words (oat, oak) but hardly ever at the end of a word.

B

When two vowels go out walking the first one does the talking, so ‘oa’ makes a long ‘o’ sound.

C

‘oa’ is very often used to make a long ‘o’ sound in the middle of words.

English

This week's English has a bit of art and design in the mix. We know that some of the Viking gods were said to have special powers; such as Loki, he was a shape- shifter. When Njord (the god of the sea) is sad, storms appear out at sea. Freya was said to have the power to control the seasons and weather. Idun carries a basket of apples which grant immortality and keep the other gods youthful and Thor has a magical hammer to summon thunderbolts. Your challenge is to design your own Viking god or goddess and write a description of what power they have. Try to use powerful adjectives and give plenty of detail. It would be great to read your descriptions if are able to type them up and email them. Some of you might be able to take a photo of your designs and up load them to me as well but no matter what, have fun with this activity and be as creative as you can be!

I've also added two Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) activities on Frog Play which you can do. One is for 'punctuation' and the other is focusing on 'adverbs' but you could complete a page from your SPAG booklet if that is better for you. It's up to you!

Maths
*  Complete a Big Maths Sheet
*  Complete a Times Tables Rockstars Challenge Sheet
*  Go on the Garage Band Sessions on Times Tables Rockstars and have any other practise
*  Have a go at the Frog Play session - counting on or back in 100s for most of you.

Take care everyone and have fun. Don't forget you can email me or message me on Frog Play if you need me for anything.
