Reception Home Learning Week Beg 15.6.20

A very big hello to our Plums and their families! I hope you enjoyed our activities last week. I have a very big smile on my face today, as I received so many amazing pictures of you all and your great learning over the week!  Take a look at them all on our plum class gallery - you will be delighted with our amazing progress.

To contact me and to send your photos through you can use my email:   bethany.whitlow@school360.co.uk

A big well done to Cillian who is this week's Star of the Week!

This week we are still on our theme 'seasides.' I have some exciting jobs for you to do this week and even a little video from Mrs Horne-Smith!

Literacy

Same as last week, I have attached 3 reading sheets for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Let your child have a go at reading the sheets, you may need to help them sound out tricky words, especially with new sounds and then have a go at 'hold the sentence' at the bottom.

The end of our week and our more creative writing comes from the story 'Winnie the Witch at the Seaside!' Take a look below at Mrs Horne-Smith's video!

Thursday's challenge is watch the story read by Mrs Horne-Smith. Then I'd like you to re-tell and then re- create the ending of the story 'Winnie the Witch at the Seaside.' In plum class we often stop at a crucial part of the story, usually where the problem occurs! We then have a big class discuss on how to solve the problem (the solution.)

I'd like you to predict what might happen next or at the end of the story.

What's the best solution to the problem in the story?

Talk with your grown ups about what you think would happen next to Winnie.

Can you think of a different ending to the story?

Once you've had a big discussion, could you create a picture of this ending and include a sentence to explain it to me? You can even act out the ending to the story, through role play, if you'd prefer!

Friday's challenge is to write a postcard from Winnie to one of her friends back at home. You can use your imagination and totally make this up! I've attached some blank postcard templates below with some colourful stamps too. Have fun writing!

Mathematics

1:  For your first challenge I'd like you to make your own 'magical seaside potions'. Discuss and have a chat with your child to see what magical potion they'd like to make and what new power they'd like to invent. Can you make a potion that takes us straight to the seaside? That way we wouldn't need to travel very far in a car to get there!

By making our potions we need some coloured water or sand, buckets or empty bottles! Whilst making the potions we need to use some mathematical language  'empty, half full, full, nearly empty and nearly full.' These are words we use when talking about capacity. Can you make a potion so that the bucket is only half full? Can you make a potion so that the bucket is full?

2: I've has attached some addition word problems below. Can you have a go at working them out? You may need to use some objects to help you work them out practically first.

3:  I've attached some summer worksheets below all to do with missing numbers. Remember you can always use a number line to help you!

The first sheet is missing numbers to 20.

The second sheet is numbers up to 50.

The third worksheet is missing numbers up to 100! So you may need to use the 100 square from last week to help you complete the sheet. There are 3 different sheets attached in the same document.

Topic

1:  Miss Whitlow lives by the sea in a place called Amble. Over the weekend she has been down to the seaside. Take a listen at the sounds she heard whilst out on her walk. Your job is to listen very carefully to the beach sound file at the bottom of this page and see how many different things you can hear.

2: Keeping on the music theme I'd like you to make your own seaside music – what have you got in your house that you can use? Can you make your own instrument? Can you make something that represents the big waves crashing? What about the seagulls, can you make something that sounds similar to them squawking? I've attached some pictures below to give you a few ideas.

3: I've attached some seaside music inspired by Claude Debussy - 'La Mer' below. This is a long piece of music which is played by a huge orchestra. Can you look up that word and tell me something about an orchestra? After that I'd like you to create a seaside picture of the calm and stormy seas in response to the music. What colours would you use if you're drawing or painting a calm sea? How would you draw or paint the seas in a storm?

A big change in the music is roughly 8.15 minutes into the music! It's incredible quiet and peaceful and then all of a sudden there's a huge change in the tone of the song.

4: Thursday's challenge is all about researching again! We like to discover and learn new facts. This time I'd like to know what animals live by the sea? Research them using a computer, laptop, Ipad or books and then draw or paint a few. Try and be creative with your animals and use your imagination - please label your animals so I know what they are!

5: Friday's challenge links to our story this week 'Winnie the Witch at the Seaside.' Winnie the Witch is bored of wearing the same clothing every day! Poor Winnie! She needs the help of Plum Class friends to design and label a new outfit for her. She is tired of wearing black, she needs more colourful clothes. Can you design a new and excited outfit for her? She likes to wear a hat but she doesn’t mind if her old one is changed a little!

You can simple draw and label a new outfit for Winnie or you can be creative an actually begin to make an outfit for her, using any scrap materials that you ca find in the house.

Have a very enjoyable week and please remember to email some photos to me!
