Reception Home Learning Week Beg 3.6.20

A very big warm welcome back to all our families in Plum class! We all hope you've had an enjoyable half term break, enjoying this sunny weather - we certainly have! With our current situation Miss Whitlow will now be writing the weekly blog for the reception children and Mrs Young will be writing sections for the year 1 children on a separate page, which will be uploaded for every Monday. This will continue to have learning activities on for literacy, mathematics, topic and reading.

Mrs Grimes will be in school every week, teaching our children who have returned back to Plum class. So if you have any questions/queries please contact myself (reception) or Mrs Young (year 1) via our email address: bethany.whitlow@school360.co.uk  and  susan.young1@school360.co.uk

We will also be awarding  star of the week each week - so do send me photos of your child completing the learning activities. Remember we don't expect you to complete everything each week - some activities you may find will run over two weeks but just complete as much as you can and do have lots of fun when doing so!

Plum class newsletter will be with you soon. This will have an overview (like always) of the topics and activities that we aim to cover during our last half term! What a scary thought - this year has gone remarkably fast! Just to quickly add that we will be covering seaside, jungle and transition themes in the coming weeks.

For our reception children:

To kick start our short week I'd like to introduce the song “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside”. This can be heard below (not sung by me fortunately!) I'm sure most of you are familiar with this.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcHyyuGjuk0&list=RDkcHyyuGjuk0&start_radio=1

For our literacy challenges this week, I'd like you to:

1: Learn the words to the song and sing and perform it to your family! You may even like to add some instruments, for extra effect!

2: I'd like you to write your own sentence starting with 'oh I do like to be beside the seaside because....' and describe what you most enjoy about being about the seaside. You can draw a little a picture to go with your sentence too.

3: In the song, there are some words that we might not know. I'd like you to look up the meaning of 'prom.' What is this? Write down your answer - you may like to draw a picture of this too!

4: Thinking about this song - is it an old song with traditional words? It mentions a brass band. What is a 'brass band' and do we still have them today?

5: Lastly, there is also a nonsense word in the song, can you find it? Once you've found it, can you make up your own nonsense word to describe the seaside?

For our reception children:

Last term we began to think about money and we started to play and count with 1p,2p and 10p in our play areas. Can you get your hands on these coins as well as 5p and 20p coins? If not, draw them on some paper. This term we will be using money to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. For starters I would like you to make your own 'seaside' or 'ice cream' shop. Keeping on the theme of seasides! How are you going to build this? What materials are you going to use? I've added some pictures below to help you get started!

1: Create a seaside / ice cream shop for buying and selling lots of lovely seaside items! You could make and draw seaside objects or find some old one around your house. Things you may like to include could be a bucket, spade, towel, beach ball, beach bag, sunglasses, sun cream, ice cream, to name a few!

I'd like you to count and use 2ps and 10ps to buy items in your shop and use the coins to make the amounts of up to 50p and then to £1.  One ice cream may cost 12p. So you would need 6, 2 pence coins . A further challenge would be to make this amount but using different coins. How else could you make this amount?

2I'd then like you to practice counting in 5s in your seaside shop. See if you can make and count in 5s to make amounts of up to 50p. If you would like a further challenge, try amounts to £1.

For our reception children:

Our topic challenges this week, I'd like you to:

1: Discuss with your family where you have been on holiday. Can you dig out any photos of you on holiday? Can you find where you have been on the map? Did you travel far to get to the destination?  – If you haven't been on holiday - I'd like you to discuss where you might be going in the summer or where you'd like to visit.

Once you've done this I'd then like you to draw a bucket and spade using bright coloured paper and create and write your own summer ‘bucket list’ (things you like to do in the summer). You could write down things like:

Go to the beach to build a sandcastle and paddle in the sea, go and visit your family who you haven't seen for a while, have a picnic or BBQ in your garden or count and sort out shells. The list is endless! I'd like to see finger spaces between words and you using your letter sound knowledge to hear the different sounds in words.

You can then use the bucket and spade that you have drawn to write your list on.

2: Research and use either a map or google maps to find a seaside/beach. Can you research any interesting facts about this particular place? Is it historical? Does it have a pier? When researching about a seaside town,  has his place changed from the past until now? If you can see that it has - tell me how it has changed? Whats different about this place? Write and draw your findings.

3: Compare Alnwick town to a seaside place such as Whitley Bay. Can you write down any differences and similarities that you notice between the two places?

As we only have a three day week this week, please don't be overwhelmed by the amount of activities to complete - all of these activities can be ongoing, and you can complete them over next week too!

We hope you enjoy this weeks challenges! If you need any further support then please feel free to email us and send through any photos of you completing the challenges so we can continue to add to the Plum class gallery!

Best wishes,

Miss Whitlow
