Reception Home Learning Week Beg 8.6.20

Hello Plums and welcome to another week of online learning.Thank you to those of you who sent through pictures and details of how your children got on throughout the week.  I hope the children enjoy seeing their work in our Plum class gallery. I won't ever use a name and a photo together and will use initials where necessary to safeguard everyone. It will be fun working out who's who! Please do let me know if you're not comfortable with your child's work being added to the gallery.

I have loved seeing pictures of your seaside sentences and seaside shops! Thank you for these and keep the photos coming so I can continue to add them to Plum class gallery and have lots of choice when choosing next weeks star of the week.

Well done to Georgia who is Plum class star of the week!

Now on to this weeks tasks!

Reading and Writing

So, we will be continuing on with Mrs Grimes' Read, Write, Inc work on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and more of a creative writing challenge for Thursday and Friday. This will continue in the same way. So I've added all three RWI sheets below.

I know some of you are still following the daily lessons on You Tube which are great for practising sounds and word building skills but I thought the children would benefit from applying this sound work a bit more. Please feel free to do both or either. The link for the daily lessons is:

It's 10.00am for Mrs Vicky, Mr Rose and Mrs Grimes’s group.

Thursday's literacy challenge is that firstly I’d like you to have a chat with your mummy or daddy and tell them what you would need to pack in your beach bag, to go to the seaside.

The idea of this challenge is to get your child really thinking deeply about the questions.

Key Questions to ask:

“Would you pack your winter woolly hat and scarf to the beach?” If no – why not?

“Why do you need to pack sun cream/sunglasses etc”

“Do you need to pack your welly boots?” Some children may respond with no as we were these in winter, some may say yes and you might go rock pooling or jump in the puddles/sea.

Would you need to pack an umbrella? Some children may respond with no, because it should be sunny and is less likely to rain at the beach during the summer months, however some may say yes, because you may need some shade – to stay out of the sun.

Friday's literacy challenge I would love it if you could use your imagination to create a short story for me about your day at the seaside and then have a good go at write some simple sentences.

I would really love it if you:

Use Fred fingers to sound out words

Use 3 red words in their story

Use finger spaces between words

Write 3 sentences

Some key ideas for your child to write about:

Where would you go?

Can you find this place on the map again like last week?

Who would go with you?

Pack a bag full of the things you have wrote down on the list in challenge 1.

What would you do during your day at the beach?

Would you build a sandcastle?

Would you have an ice cream?

How would you travel to the seaside? Can you walk there or would you go in the car?

Where would you eat your lunch – is there a fish and chip shop nearby or would you take a packed lunch?

Mathematics

1. This week we are going to be practsing our estimation skills. Can you tell me what the word estimate means? If not, can you find out?

Estimation means ...

... finding a number that is close enough to the right answer.

  • You are not trying to find the exact right answer
  • What you want is something that is good enough (usually when you are in a hurry!
So lets give this a go! Can you fill a bucket full of shells or pebbles and estimate (without counting) how many shells are inside the bucket?

Have a look around your house - what else can you use to practise your estimation skills? I'm thinking about pegs in the peg basket. How many pegs do you think are in the basket? What about washing in the clean basket, ready to be put away. How many clothes do you think are in the basket?

2. Ice Cream shop – As we only had 3 days last week to play in our shop, I've decided to continue this activity over to this week! It's a great, fun way to practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Remember everything you sell must be sold and bought in 2s, 5s and 10s! Have fun and happy shopping!

3. Lets practise counting in 5s. I'd like to use your hands for this job. Can you draw around your hand or paint your hand and stamp in on some paper. Once you've done this I'd like you to count in 5s up to 50! Have a look at the example below to help you! If you are finding this too easy - keep counting until you reach 100.

4. Now to continue with counting in 5s. We're going to make simple paper kites! Again I've attached a picture below. If you enjoyed this activity why not have a go counting in 2s and 10s. Make sure you decorate them!

5. For our final number challenge of the week we are going to be using a 100 square to count in 5s. I'd like you to:

Use a hundred square to count in 5s and point and colour each number in turn.
Encourage your child to notice the pattern of the numbers ending in 5 or 0.

I've attached a 100 square below for you to print out at home, but you can also write the numbers down if you don't have access to a printer.

Topic

1:  This challenge is to give our fingers and fine motor muscles a work out! I’d like you to use pipettes or if you don’t have these then your fingers will do to create some under water art. Some call this ‘jellyfish art’.

2: Your second challenge is a very creative one. I’d like you to plan and design your very own ‘named’ ice cream – how creative can you be? You need to design the ice cream cone, think of the ice cream that you’re going to use and think about the decoration on top and then give it a name. Once you’ve designed your ice – cream I’d then like you to label it, to explain exactly what each component is! I've added some examples below.

3: For your finally challenge I’d like you to use media found on the beachto create a 3D seaside picture or mobile. You may like to use things like: shells, sand, or small pieces of driftwood etc. I’ve attached an example below to give you an idea.

Have an enjoyable week and lots of fun joining in with the activities.

Best wishes
