Sound

As part of our science topic of sound, we investigated how sound becomes less loud the further away you are from the source of the noise. We discussed as a class how we could make the investigation fair and decided that we should use instruments rather than shout because some people may be louder than others. We also used our maths knowledge from earlier in the year and counted 10m intervals down the field so that everyone took their measurements at the same points. Finally, each group was given a Log-Box and we talked about how volume is measured in decibels.

The day was actually quite windy so we got some anomalous results. But this was quite fortunate as it meant we could also learn how and why sound can be carried by the wind.

When we got back into the classroom we plotted our results on a graph to see whether our hypothesis that a sound does become less loud the further away from the source you are (spoiler alert: it does!).
