Spring 2- 8.4.22

Our last blog of half term and its been a lovely week full of Spring time and a Easter learning.

In the mornings children have been busy in RWI practicing "fred in their head" (saying the sounds silently in their head before they read the word out loud) before reading words. We have also been practicing a variety of fun RWI games that help us consolidate our set 1 and 2 sounds as well as blending.

In maths, year one have been rounding off our work with addition and subtraction within 20. We have spent a long time mastering this that we haven't managed to move onto place value within 50. This will be our focus as we've into Summer term.

Year one have also continued to develop their understanding of measure. The past couple of weeks have been centered around developing their vocabulary- tall, taller, tallest, shortest, shorter shortest and long, longer, longest. This week we had fun measuring objects/toys using cubes. Learning to measure using a non standard measurement is a great introduction.

In reception we have continued our pattern work by creating repeating pattern paintings on our Easter cards. We hope you like them!

In our topic work, we started the week by reading the story The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson. We then had a go at writing some sentences thinking about what we can see, might smell and might hear if we were in the story. The children came up with some super ideas. We used our knowledge of Africa and specifically African landscapes and animals to help us think about what we might see, smell and hear.

As the week moved on, year one children brought together all of their research about Africa to create their own information text.  We will laminate these and put them in our reading corner for everyone to enjoy.

As we approach the Easter holidays we've spent time learning about why Christians celebrate Easter and how they celebrate. The children were very interested in the story of  Easter and we had a go at drawing our own scene and writing a sentence about the story. Everyone has had lots of Easter fun this week making cards, pictures and doing Easter crafts and we even had an Easter egg hunt on the school field!

We had a lovely walk out around school this week to spot some signs of Spring. We noticed daffodils, flowers growing, shoots, buds on plants and trees, blossom and leaves returning to trees. Spring has arrived and the children loved spotting the flowers! Afterwards we even had a go at painting our own blossom trees and drawing our own daffodils. These are now proudly on display.

We've had a busy week full of learning and the children are definitely ready for Easter holidays and a rest. They have worked so hard this half term.

Have a happy and restful two weeks and I look forward to seeing you on Monday 25th April.

Take care
Miss F
