Home Learning for 4th of May - 11th of May:

Hi and welcome to this week's home learning. I hope this message continues to find you all well, safe and staying positive. All of us at this time are going to react and cope with the current situation in different ways. I think the first couple of weeks may have been novelty for many children but I am aware that for some children, the novelty has worn off and boredom, possibly frustration and the worry of not knowing when they are going to get back to normal and see family members and friends again has set in. I don't want school work to become an anxiety or stressful situation. Some weeks may be better than others for you and if this is the case, do what you can, when you can. It is important to stay connected so if I can be of help in any way, please email. As well as being on the other end of a laptop for feedback on work, I am also here to help with absolutely anything else if I can, as well as to give reassurance : )
Another big thank you for all the work you have managed to send through. It has been great to hear about the activities the children have enjoyed and we have had some very creative water cycles! Again, I have marked this week's tasks which I would like emailed with a @ AND A MESSAGE.
Unfortunately, Frog Play is no longer available for use which is a shame as I know some of you really enjoyed using it. However, I know there are many other Home Learning Online games and resources out there which you will be using. Teachers are now thinking about our next steps as to what may need to be sent out to homes in terms of paper-based resources and I will keep you informed as to how this is going. I know some of you have mentioned that you are coming to the end of Big Maths/Maths Skills sheets. If this applies to you, just email and I will send you over the sheets you need. If you can't print these out, you can just open up the document and record the answers on your own sheet of paper.
As it is VE Day this week and Friday is a Bank Holiday, I have cut down on some of the activities but if you are doing anything to celebrate VE Day and would like to send in any photos, please do and I can pop them on a page especially for it. I have also attached some nice VE Day resources where you can make a Spitfire or design your own medal.
Please take a look at this link to the NHS competition which involves saying a big 'thank you' to the NHS. All the details are on this link and the competition deadline is not until the 19th of June.

A note about School360 points. I didn't think I was able to access the page for giving out School 360 points at the minute but I can. I know I've been asking children to keep a running total of points but I will add them on this week. I will give plenty!!

MATHS

ACTIVITY 1:
This week we are moving on to 'statistics' and the focus is pictograms. I have not attached the powerpoint as it is exactly the same as the worksheet and remember if you can't print the sheet off then just have a go at making your own. It is really important that before you read each pictogram that you look to the 'key' so you know the value of each symbol. For example, the first pictogram shows the number of ice-creams sold in one day but if you look to the key, you will see that each ice-cream symbol represents 5 ice-creams sold, therefore you will need to count in 5s to work out how many ice-creams are sold on each day. On the second pictogram, which shows the number of cars parked in a car park, each symbol is worth 2. You will notice that on some days the pictogram shows half a symbol so think carefully about what that value is. You will need to make sure you read the questions carefully to help you get to the right answer. If you have any questions about this work, please just email me.

ACTIVITY 2:
@ EMAIL THIS TO ME SO I CAN SEE YOUR PICTOGRAMS AND WHAT THEY SHOW!
Now that you've completed the worksheet, have a go at creating your own pictogram. I wonder what it could show? Maybe you've been out for a walk each day and you've been counting teddies or rainbows in windows. Your pictogram could show how many teddies or rainbows you spotted each day you were out and even if you haven't done that, you could still imagine you had and make a pictogram using teddies or rainbows as symbols! For example, I could imagine I went out for a walk on Monday and saw 21 rainbows in windows. I might have seen 16 on Tuesday but walked a different way on Wednesday and saw 26 and so on. Make sure you create a 'key' to show what each symbol is worth.

 ACTIVITY 3:
CALLING ALL WILLOW WARRIORS!!
A Times Tables Rockstars battle is starting this week. You will be able to see that in 'Tournaments', Willow Class are going head to head with Chestnut Class. We can't let them win and that means jumping into action this week to show Chestnut Class exactly how well we know our times tables! I will keep you up to date with how battle is progressing throughout the week. Come on Willow Warriors - we can do this. Let battle commence!!
If you want an extra challenge, you can still complete the 10 Garage Bands Sessions.

ENGLISH & HISTORY

ACTIVITY 1:
The link below has a good clip to explain all about the following homophones. It also has some quizzes too so you can challenge yourself to see how well you know them.

Remember...
their -  means it belongs to. For example, I ate their sweets.
they're -  is short for they are. For example, They're going to be really happy with these presents.
there - refers to a place. For example, I'm going to hide over there.
These words are called homophones. They sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings.

ACTIVITY 2:
The next two English and History activities relate to the commemoration of VE Day. Victory in Europe took place on the 8th of May 1945 and marked the defeat of Germany by the Allied Forces in World War 2. A long 6 years of suffering, courage and endurance was brought to an end as the war with Germany ceased. Imagine how the people of Britain must must have felt! People came together in the streets to celebrate. Read the powerpoint below which tells you all about VE Day.

VE DAY VETERANS
@ EMAIL YOUR FAB FACT FILES TO ME SO I CAN LEARN ALL ABOUT THE VETERANS YOU RESEARCHED.
This activity is to research a veteran ( an ex-member of the armed forces) and create a fact-file about them. Apart from their name and age, try and find out when they enlisted, the force they worked in and where they were stationed. In particular, what are their significant memories from this time. We've all heard so much about Captain Tom Moore and the fantastic way he has raised millions of pounds. You might want to find out about his memories but it's up to you. Attached below is an activity sheet you may wish to use however if you want more space to record your findings then you may want to make your own factfile. I can't wait to see what you find out! Take care with the presentation by trying to use your neatest handwriting and with punctuation by using it in all the right places followed by capital letters. You may get to put your 'their' and 'there' spellings into practise in this activity too.

ACTIVITY 3:
For this activity, I'd like you to take you back to the 8th of May 1945. Imagine that you, your family and neighbours are having a street party to celebrate the end of the war against Germany. You are going to write a diary entry for that day telling me all about what you did, what you ate and how everybody felt. The first part of this film clip may help you a bit with this but you might want to do a bit of research too. Your diary entry doesn't need to be too long but try and put as much detail into it as you can so I can get a picture in my head of the emotions and events of that day.

ART

Have a go at creating your own 75th anniversary VE Day poster or deign some bunting that you could put up as part of the celebrations. Below are some ideas that might inspire you! It would be lovely to see what you create so I can put your designs on the website.
