Week 1 (23.03.20)

Hello Maple Class,

Welcome to our weekly blog. I hope you, your families and your friends all keeping safe and well.

As mentioned in the letter which went home last week, I will post a message every Monday to explain what I would like you to look at and complete throughout the week. This will include a set of spellings, a selection of activities for maths and English as well as a reminder about accessing Times Tables Rock Stars. I will also include some wider curriculum activities to keep you busy and to add a bit of variety.

Please work through these activities at a steady pace and don't try to complete them all in one day. There is more than enough here to keep you occupied and quality is far more important that quantity.

If you find that you’ve completed all of the allocated activities and you would still like to be getting on with something, there is a list of my recommended online resources on our class page. Please get in touch via e-mail if you have any suggestions for websites to be added to the recommendations page, it would be great to hear from you and I’m sure the other members of our class would like to hear what you’ve been up to as well.

Additionally, this week I would like you to produce a Google Slides presentation about why Alfred is the only king or queen of England to have 'Great' after his name. I would like to know:
  • When was his reign?
  • Where was he born? Is there anything to commemorate his place of birth?
  • What were his major achievements?
  • What momentous event happened after he defeated the armies of King Guthrum in 878?
  • Do you consider that he deserves to be called 'Great'?
  • Is there a famous story about Alfred that may or may not be true?
BONUS: There is no historical evidence to suggest that Vikings had horns on their helmets and wearing horns or large wings on your helmet would have given your enemy a way to pull it from your head in battle. Can you find out who was responsible for this myth? Are there any other figures or events from history that are also just simply a legend (a traditional story sometimes seen as true but there is no evidence)? How does this compare to Alfred?

Some recommended websites for research are:

Google Slides can be found through the ‘My Files’ tab on School 360. This will take you to your Google Drive. From there, click on the ‘waffle’ (the real name is Google Apps) in the top right-hand corner. From there you will be able to access Google Slides. Please be as creative with your presentation as you like, add pictures, change the font and - if you’re feeling adventurous - you could even add animations! When you have finished your presentation, please share it with me so I have a look at what you have been up to.

The presentation will automatically save and will appear in your Google Drive once you have started it. To share, right click, select share and then add my email address (craig.warburton@school360.co.uk). Alternatively, whilst your presentation is open you can click on the 'Share' icon (it is blue and in the top right corner of the screen with a picture of a padlock). You will need to give it a title which includes your name (so I can tell who has created it) and enter my email address.

Maths
2 x Big Maths sheets from the packs provided.
Times Table Rockstar Challenge - complete ten ‘Garage’ sessions.
Frog Play quiz recapping our area, perimeter and fractions work so far.

Good luck with your tasks with week and please keep in touch to let me know how you are getting on!
