week 2- 14.1.22

Another week gone by already! Well done to all, you're working really hard.

We are continuously working really hard during RWI sessions. Reception are continuing with reading ditties, reading and writing green and red words and having a go at writing short sentences. All of us need to practice letter formation at home where possible. Many children are mixing up the letters b and d and are mixing up our formation. Keep going everyone!

Year 1 friends continue to practice recognising and using set 2 sounds in their writing. We are having a big focus on accurate letter formation, finger spaces and full stops. Please practice this with your child at home by getting them to write short sentences and check back for these elements.

In maths, year 1 have been looking further at subtraction with a focus on finding a part. Examples of focus questions have been... "how many children are not wearing party hats" or "how many ice creams have got sprinkles". Children had to find the total amount and take away one part to find the other. We found this a bit confusing. We will keep practicing.

Reception friends have been practicing their composition to five by playing a fun game. We enjoyed trying to throw 5 bean bags into a hoop. Each time we threw, some went in and some did not. However, this allowed us to see how 5 is made up. For example, 2 landed in the hoop and 3 did not. 2 plus 3 equals 5. Have a go at home. You could even extend this activity up to 10 bean bags.

In our topic work we have been learning all about birds. We started the week by learning the names of some birds, talking about their features, habitats, what they like to eat etc. We enjoyed lots of different videos and looking at stories as stimulus for our learning. Reception children enjoyed taking part in a bird hunt around our school grounds. Although we didn't see a big variety we did see blackbirds, seagulls, pigeons and blue tits. We decided that we wanted to put some food out for them and so we decided to make our own feeders later in the week.

Year 1 were in charge of writing instructions to tell reception how to make their own. First we looked closely at the layout for instructions and then we had to think about the ingredients and equipment before we could write. We then thought about important language to use (first, next, after that and finally). We made sure to use this language to make it easy for our friends to follow. Children then wrote their instructions with support focusing on writing sentences with growing independence, checking for finger spaces and full stops.

In other activities, we really enjoyed drawing our own birds and making our own birds using feathers and materials. They are now proudly on display.

In PE we enjoyed learning about attacking and defending. We learnt that attacking is when you are trying to score points and defending is when you try to stop the others from scoring points. We enjoyed playing our first game and we all tried really hard to remember our roles as attackers or defenders. Great work everyone!

A busy week had by all! Have a good rest this weekend. Dont forget to complete your numicon challenge, read when you can and have a go at reading/writing your some green and red words.

Take care, Miss F
