Week 4- 28.1.22

Another week that has flown by! We have lots of tired plum class children this week so enjoy a restful weekend at home ready for another busy week ahead on Monday.

This week has been a busy one with us learning lots of different things in our topic work. On Monday, year one children continued to learn about materials and we focused on looking closely at the properties of various materials around the classroom. We looked at plastic, glass, brick, rock, metal, paper, wood and cardboard. We thought carefully about what they felt like, looked like and we tested to see if they could be bent, stretched, twisted or changed. We had fun investigating and recording our results. This activity really helped us to think about the vocabulary we are using.

Later in the week, year ones really enjoyed designing their boxes in design technology. THANK YOU for bringing in your shoe boxes this week! First, we looked at various examples of what shoe boxes could be used for and then the children came up with some wonderful ideas- memory box, treasure box, money box, pet food container etc. We spent all of Wednesday afternoon designing our creations. On Thursday/Friday we put the first layer of paint on our boxes ready to decorate further next week. We talked lots about the importance of recycling and how this was a great way to reuse something old that we no longer need.

Our reception friends have been busy learning more about Winter time. We started the week by re reading A Winter's sleep. This is a great book all about hibernation during Winter. We revisited our learning from Autumn and talked about animals that would be hibernating and why. We talked further about the changes to the weather and revisited the word migration. We then enjoyed watching various videos to help stimulate conversation and thoughts. Follow the link below to watch at home...

After this, we had fun going on a Winter hunt around school and we noticed lots of changes since our last Autumn hunt. We noticed bare trees, wet damp brown leaves, some ice, bushes with very little berries (we decided that the birds may have eaten them) and we noticed the weather had got very cold so we decided to wrap up warm!

Later in the week, reception enjoyed "packing for an Arctic expedition". We thought carefully about what we would need to take and why. We had lots of discussion about which things were important, not so important and things we would like to take to help us learn/discover more. We cut out various Winter clothing and objects and stuck them to our suitcases. Great work everyone.

After this we had a go at writing some sentences using Winter pictures as stimulus. We are all doing so well with our writing and we are trying our very best. Children are now hearing most of the sounds in words and have super pencil grips. However, when it comes to writing the sentence down, lots of us need support to remember which word comes next. Keep practicing holding the sentence in your head before writing the sentence down. Don't forget to prompt your child to use finger spaces and put a full stop at the end.

In our mathematics work, reception have been looking closely at the number 6. We have been sorting visual representations of 6 and not 6 and have been busy practicing our number formation. The children had lots of fun using the giant tens frame to show the number bonds to 6.

In year 1 we have moved onto place value within 20. We have spent lots of time looking at how numbers 11-20 are made up. For example, 10 is made of 1 group of 10 and 1 more. 12 is made of 1 group of 10 and 2 more etc. The children grasped this concept quickly and enjoyed a range of activities to help consolidate their learning.

In other mathematical learning, year 1 had fun exploring the weight of various objects and they used cubes to work out how much things weigh. We began by predicting which objects would weigh the most and which would weigh least.

In PE we had lots of fun learning how to play piggy in the middle! We recapped our vocabulary- attacking and defending. The aim of piggy in the middle is to defend and stop your friends from throwing a ball to each other. The children worked really hard and had lots of fun. Why not have a go at home? All you need is a team of 3 and something to throw- a ball, bean bag, socks rolled up. Have fun!

What a busy week it's been, have a super weekend everyone- Miss F

Don't forget, have a go at some home learning:
Read your new book (as many times as you can)
Complete this weeks numicon challenge
Read and write down some green and red words- have a go at using 2 red words in a sentence
Access Bug Club and Numbots when possible
