Week 5- 3.12.21

Another week gone by and what a busy week it's been...

In RWI reception have learnt the sounds qu, x and ng. We found making the ng sound with our mouth quite tricky. Keep practicing this at home! Can you think of words beginning or ending with qu, x and ng? Next week we will learn our last sound of our set one group. After this we will practice blending up until Christmas.

In our mathematical work, year one have continued to learn more about part whole models. We have used various resources this week to have a go at completing part whole models with growing independence. We have also introduced our addition sign and had a go at writing number sentences next to our part whole models. All of this learning has sparked us to think about number bonds to 5 and number bonds to 10. Lots of year one friends found it tricky to think of various ways to make 10. It is so important for children to know their number bonds and so we will be working more on this next week.

In reception, we have concentrated on number bonds to 5. We used 5 frames and coloured counters to visually see the number bonds to 5. We are getting better at this, great work everyone!

We have also had lots of fun thinking about time. We specifically thought about what 30 seconds and then 1 minute looks like. We enjoyed doing as many challenges in 30 seconds and 1 minute as we could. How many star jumps can you do in 30 seconds?

In our topic work we have been busy kicking off our Christmas celebrations! We have talked lots about why is Christmas is important to Christians, why and how they celebrate and we introduced the story of Christmas, The Nativity. We watched this lovely video to help us understand the story of christmas...

To support our learning, our reception friends have been brave writers this week and have had a go at writing a very short sentence/word next to pictures from the Nativity story. They did a fantastic job of sounding out their words! As we wrote, I encouraged them to use finger spaces between words. Great work!

Year one had lots of fun making their own books to tell the christmas story!

As part of our DT work, year 1 also began making their very own Christmas gift..... they can't wait to show you in the next couple of weeks.

Later in the week we read the story The Jolly Christmas Postman. This story is about a busy postman who delivers letters to lots of different story characters. We thought carefully about why people write letters and we had a go at writing our own. Some of us wrote a thank you letter to "granny from red riding hood" or an apology letter from "goldilocks to the three bears". We will continue our letter writing work next week.

Our reception friends got busy and wrote their letters to Santa! How exciting!!

With links to this learning, we set up a lovely Christmas post office in our classroom! The children have LOVED role playing and writing their own letters during free play. They enjoyed filling envelopes, weighing parcels, sorting stamps and much more!

In other exciting news, plum class have had a visitor this week.... Eddie the Elf!! We were so excited to find Eddie had sprinkled some Christmas magic and landed in our classroom on Wednesday December 1st. He is here to look out for kind and helpful boys and girls on the run up to Christmas. We are so excited to show him all of our learning over the next few weeks!

Next week will be another busy and festive week!

Take care, hopefully we will have a calmer weekend- Miss F
