Week 7: Monday 4th May

Monday 4th May 2020

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to another week of Home Learning.

Well done and thank you for sending your work to me. I loved reading all of your arguments about plastic last week and seeing your chocolate experiments. This week, some of our home learning tasks will be based around commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE Day. VE Day was the day that World War 2 ended in Europe. As Friday is a Bank Holiday, I have set four English and four maths tasks.

I have marked the tasks that I would like to be emailed this week with @ EMAIL!  and I have also added some further information

English

Activity 1:

I have attached a reading comprehension all about VE Day for you to complete. The reading comprehension has the usual text to read and then questions to answer. You don’t have to print either of these off, you can just pop your answers onto a piece of paper but remember to write your answers in full sentences! There are 3 different reading comprehensions in the file attached, ranging from 1 star to 3 stars. You will notice that they increase in difficulty. I would like you to challenge yourself and pick which comprehension you would like to complete. There are also answer sheets so you or someone at home can check your answers once you have finished.

Activity 2:

I would like you to research and then create a fact file all about a WW2 veteran. (Hint hint, one veteran has just raised A LOT of money for NHS!) I have attached a fact file template below to help you structure your work. Remember, you don’t need to print this off, you can create your own on paper or even create a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation. I would like your fact file to answer these key questions:

  1.        Who is your veteran?
  2.        Where and when were they born?
  3.        What did they do during the war?
  4.        What have they done since the war?

 Activity 3:

I would like you to read for 30 minutes. You could read a fiction story book, a magazine, a recipe book, a non-fiction book, a comic… the list is endless. Once you have completed your reading, pick a task from below to complete:

  •          Create a new front cover for what you have read
  •          Create a wordsearch which includes key vocabulary from your reading
  •          Write a book review
  •          Write a blurb
  •          Create a poster advertising what you have read
  •          Draw an illustration of one of the characters or things from your text
  •          Write a character description
  •          Create a model which relates to what you have read
  •          Write the next chapter of your text

Try to pick a different activity to the one you completed last week. If you have any more suggestions of activities that I could add to the list, please let me know!

Activity 4:

Spellings for this week are set below for all 3 groups. Have a go at the 'look, say, cover, write' approach but why not try other ways of learning your spellings. Write them in different colours, in different letter styles ( wobbly, bubble), small letters, big letters or why not time yourself to see how quickly you can write them all or how many times you can write one word in 30 seconds! Get someone at home to test you on your words to see how many you have learnt! I know some of you have completed our pirate spelling book, don’t worry about this, just write your spellings on a piece of paper!

Maths

Activity 1: @ EMAIL! Please can you email your answers to this task.

Your first maths activity this week is based around ordering money. To successfully complete this task, you will need to convert money from pounds to pence and vice versa.

Just remember that 100p = £1

So…….. 245p = £2.45 or 3456p = £34.56

I have attached a PowerPoint presentation for you to work through as well as a worksheet to complete. This can be done on paper, you don’t need to print the worksheet off but I would like you to email me your answers to this task so I can see how you are getting on.

Activity 2: Estimating

The second maths task for this week is estimating using money. Remember that estimating means to have a really good guess using our maths knowledge. You will need to use your excellent rounding skills for estimating too – just like you did for decimals work. The rhyme is: one to four, slide to the floor, five to nine, climb the vine! There is a PowerPoint to have a look at and then a worksheet to complete.

Some of the questions in this activity are a little tricky, if you get stuck, please just send me an email!

Activity 3:

Please complete 2 pages of your Schofield and Sims book.

Activity 4:

Chestnut class have been challenged to a Times Table Rockstar Battle. This week we are battling against Willow class. The aim of the game is to complete more Rockstar games than Willow class over the course of the week. Let the battle commence…..

History – VE Day

@ EMAIL! Please can you email your finished poster.

I would like you to create a poster celebrating VE Day. I would like to see key information on your poster as well as illustrations and lots of colour. I have attached a PowerPoint all about VE Day to help you with this task. Maybe you could display your poster in a window in your house when you have finished?

Good luck with your home learning tasks this week and remember to take lots of breaks and keep smiling! I’m looking forward to seeing your work and giving you feedback on it.

Stay safe Chestnut class and I’ll be touch again soon….

Miss M :)
