Intent of our Mathematics Curriculum

At Swansfield Park Primary School, we intend to provide a rich, engaging and coherent curriculum that promotes curiosity, deep understanding and the ability to think logically and critically, enabling children to become confident, successful and resilient mathematicians.

Our curriculum aims to provide all children with opportunities to explore, reason and investigate in order that they develop a strong conceptual understanding of number, which can be applied to sophisticated problem solving and the wider world around them.

Ultimately, we want all our children to believe that they CAN achieve in mathematics, and by demonstrating that making mistakes and correcting misconceptions makes us more secure learners, we foster a positive attitude towards the subject.

We believe that a strong foundation in mathematics is essential for future success, both in education and in life beyond school.

Through this approach, we believe that we nurture mathematically fluent, resilient, and inquisitive mathematicians.

Implementation of our Mathematics Curriculum

  • From EYFS to the end of KS2, the maths curriculum is taught through the White Rose scheme.

  • Children experience maths through both concrete and physical activities as well as through pictorial and abstract representations of number.

  • In Nursery, the curriculum is divided into 24 blocks and early maths skills, thinking and talk are taught through a combination of adult-led and continuous provision activities. The focus is on introducing the foundations of mathematics through hands-on, practical experiences for number, shape, measure and spatial thinking. Mathematical discovery opportunities are always available during our morning and afternoon sessions through continuous provision.

  • In Reception, the curriculum is divided into 18 blocks with daily teaching through a series of small sequential steps using a combination of adult-led activities and continuous provision.

  • In Reception and KS1, a daily Mastering Number session, focusing on subitizing and composition of numbers is delivered through the use of manipulatives to develop fluent number sense, confidence and automaticity in calculations.

  • Mathematical experiences also form part of daily routines in Nursery and Reception such as self registration; fruit and snack time and tidying up.

  • In KS1 and KS2, the curriculum is taught using the White Rose Maths framework. Schemes of learning are followed and a small-step, mastery approach is adopted in all year groups. A sequential series of lessons are identified for each unit of work through a set of ‘Steps to Success’ and supplemented with resources from a variety of sources.

  • One lesson per week, children in Year 1 through to Year 6 have a Big Maths lesson. This is a structured weekly test designed to embed core arithmetic skills through repetition. Using a ‘beat your own score’ approach.

  • In addition to daily maths lessons, children in KS1 and KS2 also have a standalone, 30-minute arithmetic lesson each week to foster deep number sense and enhance automaticity in calculations.

  • We support children in KS2 to develop their times table fluency and recall speed through x3 Times Table Rockstar challenges per week.
