Welcome to our PE Page!
Intent of the PE Curriculum:
At Swansfield Park Primary School, we believe that high-quality, inclusive Physical Education is the foundation for a lifelong journey of health and well-being. Our curriculum is progressive and sequenced to inspire every pupil to succeed, whether through competitive sport, adventurous outdoor activities, or personal fitness.
Our vision is to provide a broad range of opportunities where pupils are challenged to achieve their personal best. By ensuring that individual effort and collective teamwork are equally celebrated, we provide the platform for all children—regardless of their starting point—to develop the physical literacy and technical skills required to excel.
Through a balance of individual and team-based learning, we intentionally nurture the values of resilience, fairness, and respect. Our ultimate goal is to equip the children of Swansfield Park with the physical competence and emotional strength they need to thrive, both within our school and in their lives beyond the classroom.
Implementation of our PE Curriculum:
Foundation & Frequency
In EYFS, all pupils receive a discrete weekly PE session designed to develop their core gross motor skills. Alongside this, children have daily opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills through purposeful play and carefully planned provision.
From Years 1–6, all pupils receive two dedicated PE sessions per week. These lessons are delivered discretely by a blend of specialist sports coaches and school-based teaching staff to ensure high-quality instruction and continuity.
Curriculum Breadth
Our comprehensive PE curriculum is strategically structured across five key pillars:
-
Dance & Gymnastics: Developing core strength, flexibility, and creative expression.
-
Invasion Games: Fostering teamwork, spatial awareness, and tactical thinking.
-
Athletics: Building stamina, power, and personal bests.
-
Swimming (KS2): Ensuring water safety and technical proficiency.
We strengthen our provision through active partnerships with local community clubs, including rugby, football, cricket, and tennis, providing clear pathways for pupils to pursue sports outside of school hours.
Swimming & Water Safety
All Key Stage 2 pupils attend swimming lessons at Willowburn Leisure Centre, led by specialist instructors. Our curriculum is designed so that by the end of Year 6, every child aims to:
-
Swim at least 25 meters independently.
-
Demonstrate a range of effective swimming strokes.
-
Perform essential self-rescue techniques in various water conditions.
Competition & Active Lifestyles
We believe in the power of healthy competition and daily physical activity:
-
Structured Play: Age-appropriate equipment is provided at breaktimes and lunchtimes to encourage self-directed physical activity.
-
Intra-school Sport: All pupils compete for their School House during our annual Summer Phase Sports Days.
-
Inter-school Sport: Pupils in Years 1–6 represent the school in local festivals and tournaments, promoting sportsmanship and resilience.
-
Extra-Curricular: A rotating calendar of weekly sports clubs—led by specialists and staff—allows pupils to explore interests beyond the core curriculum.
