Blog 4 - 7th Oct

A very busy week in Apple Class but lots of awesome Autumnal fun!

Our key words this week have been: Autumn, change, falling, pine cones, conkers, acorns, sticks.

Just a quick one, please keep checking your child's learning journal. They are all up and running on the school360 app. If you are yet to see any observations of your child then please talk to Mrs Farrar and I'll have a look into it for you.

This week we have started our Autumn learning and have focused our week around the story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert (if you'd like to listen to the story follow this link https://youtu.be/bqW-j3WV6g8 ). This is a super story about a Leaf Man that is blown away by the wind. He travels over meadows, mountains, rivers and past lots of leaf animals. Can you remember any animals that he passes? We read the story everyday and practiced recalling key phrases. For example, "a leaf mans got to go where the wind blows". The children really enjoyed joining in!

Afterwards, the children had a go at creating their own leaf characters. Some of us made leaf men, ladies and some of us made leaf animals. We thought carefully about what they should look like and what type of leaf or Autumn treasure we would need. See the picture below of our fabulous Leaf Man display!

To go with our core text 'Leaf Man' this week we've really took a closer look at the leaves in our school grounds and how they are changing! The children have learnt that the leaves start to change colour from green, to Autumnal colours such as brown, red, yellow and orange in the Autumn time.

In other learning around the classroom, the children have been busy practicing their pencil grip whilst colouring Autumn leaves, painting leaf picture using Autumnal colours for our Autumn tree display and have developed their scissors skills to cut out leaves to make Autumn pictures.

We've really enjoyed our exploration in our tuff tray this week. We've used giant tweezers to carefully pull our the conkers and their shells and place them in the pots - this activity has been great for our hand eye coordination and fine motor skills.

We've had the best fun using our conker slides! Rolling conkers through simple tubes to see how fast they shoot out.

Have a great weekend everyone and we'll see you all next week when we start to learn all things 'Harvest.'
