Doubles!

Your challenge this week is to find the double!

Place all the Numicon plates out in front of you.  Take it in turns to pick a plate from 1-5.  Who is the first to find its double?  (Eg. If you pick 5, the first person to find 10; if you pick 2, the first person to pick up 4).  Each time, the first person who finds the double gets a point.  The winner is the first person to get 10 points!

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Enjoy.

Week 2 Summer 1

This week we will kick things off with a Numicon challenge!

We have been ordering numbers to 20 and thinking about the pattern of teen numbers in Pear Class for the last few weeks. So with that in mind...first, can you order your numicon from 1-10. Now you need to finish your number track by creating numbers 11-20. Use some of the numicon you already have and draw around it. For example, to make 11 you will need to draw around 10 and 1.

I can't wait to see your number lines!

Week 6 - week ending 04.03.22

This weeks challenge is a game of swaps

Have your child order the numicon plates to 10. Discuss the staircase pattern that they can see and how as the numbers get bigger there is a step up in the pattern. Have your child close their eyes and swap one of the plates around. Your child then has to discover which plate is in the incorrect place and fix it. Repeat this for several turns seeing who out of the two of you can discover the number to do a swap with the quickest!

Don't forget to upload to upload your game to the 360 journals!

Week 5 -Week ending 11.02.22

This weeks challenge is called 'make that number!'

Place a pile of numbers in a box and have your child choose a number. Using the numicon plates see how many different ways your child can make that number. So if the number is 5 they may be able to make this with a plate number 2 and a plate number 3 but can they find another way and then record the different combinations that they have used?

this can be extended into the teen numbers for those children who are really secure in number bonds to 10.

We look forward to seeing your learning on the journals!

Week 4 - week ending 4.2.22

This week's challenge involves a race against time!  This is a game to play with a partner (maybe a sibling or an adult you look after).

One person picks up a plate between 4 and 8.  When you have chosen your plate, say "more" or "fewer".  The other person then has to pick a plate which is more or fewer (whichever was said) as quickly as possible.  Swap roles and see who can do it the quickest!

 Challenge:
Can you work out how many more or fewer the plate is?

Don't forget to upload onto your journals.  Have fun!

Week 3  - week ending 28.1.22

This week let’s warm up by playing “Guess the number”.  Hide the numicon plates 1-5 in a bag.  Can you put your hand in (no peeking!) and guess which number it is by the feel of it?  How many holes are there?  Pull it out and see if you are right!  If this is easy try with 6-10.

Now let's work on our number bonds:

Can you use the numicon pieces to work out all of the different ways to make 5? Try joining 1 and 4, does this equal 5. You could find out by placing numbers 1 and 4 on top of the number 5. Now list all of the different ways to make 5 by writing out the number sentences e.g. 1+4=5, 2+3=5 etc.

If you want a challenge, try the same with ways of making 6 and making 7.

Remember to upload onto your School 360 learning Journeys for us to see! Have fun!

Week Two- Wk. ending 21/01/22

Ths week your challenge is to create a Numicon City with your Numicon Plates. This may be a magical world for Superhero's, Unicorns or Wizards but use your Numicon to draw around to create different sized buildings.

1. Draw out your design including the holes on each Numicon plate.
2. Colour each Numicon plate the correct colour for that number eg. number 1 Numicon plate is orange.
3. Can you add up the different sized buildings? For example your shortest building might be Numicon 3, 4 and 2 which makes 9 altogether. Remember to count the holes to help you.
4. Can you tell me which is the tallest tower, which is the shortest tower and how many Numicon more is your tallest tower? For example, my shortest tower might be 7 and my tallest is 10. I can count on from 7 to work out that my tallest tower is 3 more than my shortest.

Remember to upload onto your School 360 learning Journeys for me to see! Have fun and I look forward to seeing your creations!

Week 7 - week ending 11.3.22

This week's challenge is "Making 10"

Find your 10 plate.
Pick another plate and place it on top.  How many holes are empty?  Can you find the partner to put on top too so that 10 is covered?
Have a go at writing your number sentence to show it:  eg 10 = 6 + 4
Repeat with different plates.

Don't forget to upload your photos to your journals!

Week one - wk ending 14.1.21

Welcome to your first Numicon home learning challenge. I hope you have been enjoying your Numicon packs at home already but by setting a different challenge for you each week will allow you to challenge yourself or others and have even more fun!

This weeks challenge is all about adding and subtracting 1. Even if your child can tell you one more and one less in their head, it is so important that they can show and explain how they got to that answer.

1. Arrange the Numicon plates in order 1-10.
2.Then take the 1 plate and add it to each of the other plates (2-10).  What number do you have when you add 1? Draw around the 2 Numicon plates and write the addition sentence below. For example 2+1=3.

Remember to upload your creations to your School360  account - I look forward to seeing your number stories!
