Maths

Maths/number home learning tasks.

Here are some activities for your child to do at home. Often they will make use of the Numicon set which was gifted to every child in Year 1 before Christmas.

Friday 13th May
This week we have been doing more measuring work in our maths sessions, looking at capacity and volume. So it's time for some water play at home! Choose three different containers (e.g. a jug, a bowl, a plastic bottle). Take a cup or a yoghurt pot and find out how many (full!) scoops it takes to fill each container. Line your containers up in order from smallest to largest.
Extension: if it takes 4 full yoghurt pots of water to fill a bowl, how many full pots to fill 2 bowls? And 3 bowls?

Friday 6th May
We'd like everyone to have a go at the White Rose Maths One Minute Maths app this week. I know lots of the children have already been using this for a while now and the positive effects are being seen in the classroom with improvements in the children's ability to subitise quickly and in their number knowledge.
You can download the app from your preferred app store (Apple App StoreGoogle PlayAmazon Kindle).
Thank you for your support.

Friday 29th April
This week we have been learning how to measure the length and height of different objects in the classroom. Can you use your Numicon pieces to measure things around your house? How many '6' plates long is your favourite teddy? Can you use two different plates and add them together like we did in class? Send me a photo of your measuring skills!

Friday 4th February
This week's challenge involves a race against time!  This is a game to play with a partner, maybe your brother or sister, or an adult.

One person picks up a Numicon plate.  When you have chosen your plate, say "more" or "less".  The other person then has to pick a plate which is more or less (whichever was said) as quickly as possible. You have 1 minute to get as many right as possible. Swap roles and see who can get the most right in the time limit.

Extra Challenge:
Can you use two plates to form a number bond which is more or less than the original plate!

Friday 28th January
This week we'd like the children to have a go on a new online app which has been produced by White Rose Maths (an organisation that provides maths resources and schemes of learning for schools). The app is called 1-Minute Maths and it helps children to build greater number confidence and fluency. It’s all about targeted practice in engaging, one-minute chunks.
You can download the app from your preferred app store (Apple App Store; Google Play; Amazon Kindle).
Thank you for your support.

Friday 21st January
1. Choose a Numicon piece.
2. Can you find two other pieces to make the same amount as your chosen piece? Arrange the "parts" on top of the "whole". Can you find another way to make the number (e.g. 5 and 2 make 7, as well as 4 and 3)?
3. Draw a large part-whole model and put the pieces into the correct circle. Then, write the corresponding number sentence e.g. 3 + 4 = 7

Friday 7th January
1. Arrange the Numicon plates in order 1-10.
2. Take the 1 plate and add it to each of the other plates (2-10) in turn.  What number do you have when you add 1? Draw around the two Numicon plates and write the addition sentence underneath; e.g. 2 + 1 = 3.
3. Next, subtract 1 from each plate 2-10 by placing the 1 plate on top (to 'block out' one of the holes) - how many holes are left? Write out the number sentences; e.g 3 - 2 = 1.
Please send me a photo of your work to chris.rose@school360.co.uk
