Reading in Maple Class

We love to read in Maple Class and take every opportunity we can to get stuck into a good book! Every Tuesday, we get to go into the school library and choose a book to read for pleasure. We have a Guided Reading book that we read in school and also get to take it home to enjoy with our family. As well as all of this, we have a class read where we choose a book to enjoy as a class.

Our Class Read Spring Term

We are reading 'Little Manfred' this half term.

We were lucky enough to see a live theatre production of ‘Little Manfred’ at the Alnwick Playhouse. We enjoyed the performance so much that the children in Maple class requested that this book be our next story time reader.

This is a synopsis of the story…

When the Bismarck sinks, one of the only German survivors is taken on board a British ship as a prisoner of war. Sent to live with a host family, Walter must adapt to a new way of life, in the heart of an enemy country. Gradually, though, he finds a friend in ten-year-old Grace. So when the time finally comes to go back to Germany, it’s an emotional parting, with Walter leaving Grace with only a carved wooden dog to remember him by. The question is, will Walter and Grace ever meet again? In 1966, with the World Cup coming to Britain, that opportunity may just have come along.

Our spotlight author this term is Michael Morpurgo. You will find a range of books written by him on display in Maple class and information on how he became successful. The children are enjoying learning about a new author each term.

Our Class Read Autumn 2

We are reading 'Stig of the Dump' this half term.

Barney is a solitary little boy who often wanders off by himself in the countryside. Exploring an old chalk pit, he finds himself in a cave where he meets a strange boy who wears a rabbit skin and speaks in grunts. His grandparents don't believe Barney when he tells them about his new cave boy friend - but nevertheless, the two enjoy plenty of fun together.
Alnwick Library Visit
We were very lucky to visit Alnwick Library. We got to look around the library's facilities and enjoy spending some time reading. We had the opportunity to join the library as a class to enrich our love of reading and those of us who weren't already members had the chance to sign up as well. Here are some photos of us enjoying our visit.

We are currently reading 'Demon Dentist' by David Walliams:

"Darkness had come to the town. Strange things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but in the morning they would wake up to find… a dead slug; a live spider; hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling beneath their pillow.

Evil was at work. But who or what was behind it…?"
