Week 9: Monday 18th May

Monday 18th May 2020

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well and welcome to a new week of home learning. This work will keep you busy until 1st June and as an extra, we have a school art competition which has a closing date of 3rd June – I really hope that you will be inspired and take part in the competition.

I just want to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone for your ongoing efforts to maintain learning at home. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Please don’t feel as though you have to complete and email every single activity. I understand that some of you are trying to juggle work and home learning at the same time so it is bound to be tricky. Most of the activities set enable children to work fairly independently so please don’t feel any pressure.

As always, I have marked the tasks that I would like to be emailed with @ EMAIL!  and I have also added some further information.

English

Activity 1:

This week we are going to be creating an information leaflet all about a tourist attraction located in the North East. Your first task is going to be to pick the attraction you would like to create your leaflet about. In case you are struggling, here are some suggestions: Alnwick Garden, Alnwick Castle, Aln Valley Railway and Beamish. Once you have chosen the attraction, you will need to complete some research. Use these subheadings t structure your research:

  •          Where is your attraction located?
  •          How much does it cost to go there?
  •          What can you do when you are there?
  •          Why should people visit this attraction?
  •          What will people learn at this attraction?

Activity 2: @ EMAIL Please email me your finished leaflet

Using your research from activity 1, your next task is to put together your information leaflet about the tourist attraction. You might choose to do this on paper or it could be presented in a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation. Use the research subheadings above to help structure your leaflet and remember to make it bright and colourful with lots of pictures.

Activity 3:

I would like you to read for 30 minutes. You could read a fiction story book, a magazine, a recipe book, a non-fiction book, a comic… the list is endless. Once you have completed your reading chose activity one, two or all three.

  1.        DRAW FIVE THOUGHT BUBBLES AND WRITE WHAT THE MAIN CHARACTER MIGHT BE THINKING AT DIFFERENT STAGES IN THE STORY. I WONDER HOW THE CHARACTER'S THOUGHTS MIGHT CHANGE?
  2.        DRAW A LARGE PICTURE OF ONE OF THE SETTINGS USED IN THE BOOK. LABEL EVERYTHING IN THE PICTURE USING WORDS AND PHRASES FROM THE BOOK.
  3.        NON-FICTION - WRITE DOWN ALL THE FACTS YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM READING THIS TEXT. YOU COULD CREATE A POSTER FROM THE FACTS OR USE GOOGLE SLIDES. THINK OF A CREATIVE WAY TO RECORD WHAT YOU HAVE FOUND OUT.

Activity 4:

We no longer have access to Frog Play – the frog is officially dead. This week I would like you to explore some of the punctuation and grammar games found on the BBC Bitesize website. I have chosen to focus on prepositions, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions Here are the links to the tutorials and games:

Activity 5:

Spellings for this week are set below for all 3 groups. Have a go at the 'look, say, cover, write' approach but why not try other ways of learning your spellings. Write them in different colours, in different letter styles ( wobbly, bubble), small letters, big letters or why not time yourself to see how quickly you can write them all or how many times you can write one word in 30 seconds! Get someone at home to test you on your words to see how many you have learnt!

Maths

Activity 1:

This week we are going to recap written multiplication and division. I know we have already covered this in our maths lessons at school, but I think it is important that we go back and recap these skills. Activity 1 is going to be recapping  written multiplication. I have attached PowerPoints and worksheets below for both 2 digit by 1 digit and 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication, please challenge yourself when choosing which activity you complete. Some of the questions ask you to use place value counters, just ignore that part and complete the calculations.

Activity 2:

Activity 2 is recapping written division. Like activity 1, I have attached PowerPoints and worksheets below for 2 digit by 1 digit and 3 digit by 1 digit division – remember to challenge yourself when choosing which activity you complete.

Activity 3: @ EMAIL please send me your answers for the Big Maths sheet you chose to complete!

Please complete one Big Maths sheet. I know that some of you have come to the end of your Big Maths sheets, so I have attached a Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4 Big Maths sheet below. You can choose which sheet you complete – challenge yourself!

Activity 4:

Please complete 2 pages of your Schofield and Sims book.

Activity 5:

Please complete the challenge I have set for you on Timetable Rockstars.

Science

So far we have looked at sorting materials into the three states of matter and how solids change. This week, children will be investigating the weight of gases. As with last week, I have attached presentation and some resources. There is no need to print anything off and don’t feel that you need to follow the plan to the letter if you don’t have all the equipment, something is impossible (such as working in pairs), or if for any other reason it is impractical to do so.

Art

I have attached details of the Swansfield Art competition below. Closing date is Wednesday 3rd June.  I really hope that you will be inspired by the choice of tasks and get involved in the competition.

Good luck with your home learning tasks this week and remember to take lots of breaks and keep smiling! I’m looking forward to seeing your work and giving you feedback on it.

Stay safe Chestnut class and I’ll be touch again soon….
