Head Teacher's Blog 22.01.24

21st January 2024

Well, after the very chilly week we have just had, it looks like we’re back to stormy weather next week. Please continue to ensure children can wrap up warm and have outdoor shoes/wellies in school because we’ll be getting out for playtimes and lunchtimes as much as we can.

Lots of positive things to report from last week - it was great to see Pear family and friends on Wednesday for lunch. For many Pear families, this was the first opportunity you’ve had to come in and share lunch with us. We hope you enjoyed it! Children in Larch and Sycamore enjoyed their trips down to the town library and returned to school armed with new books for their classrooms. They’re all really  excited about their reading for pleasure time this half term with their new texts boosting their bookshelves. I had the pleasure of celebrating with two really successful writers this week. Firstly, on Thursday, I met with William from Oak class. William’s RWI group leader was so impressed with his independent writing that she brought him along to see me and I have to say, I was really impressed too! Not only had William written a character description with really ambitious  vocabulary, he had remembered to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Then on Friday, Henry from Willow class popped to see me with his great writing. Mrs Smith has been blown away by Henry’s conscientious attitude to improving his handwriting and I have to say, I was too! When I looked at the improvement of Henry’s presentation between September and now, it was huge. Both of these writers should be feeling very proud of themselves for the care and courage they approach their work with. If you’d like to see their fabulous work, both pieces are on display on our Celebrating Writing board in the entrance hall.

Our whole school attendance continues to be affected by the myriad of germs in circulation at the moment and was 92.9% last week. Oak class were our best attenders with 98.9%. Fingers crossed for a ‘well’ week ahead!

Let’s have a look at the week to come:

  • Rowan Class will head down to the town library on Monday afternoon (we will of course keep a close eye on the weather forecast and storm Isha)

  • Year 2 will be joined by some visitors from the NSPCC on Tuesday who will deliver some workshops on keeping safe. This work fits into the Year 2 PHRSE curriculum

  • We’re really looking forward to our first Fun with Numbers session on Thursday. This session will be for Year 6 and if you’ve not already signed up on the Google form, please do so if you’re able to join us. Mr Fordham -Scott will be ready to welcome you all with tea and coffee from 08.45.

  • Another treat for Thursday will be Beech class assembly. Family and friends are warmly invited to join us for a 14.30 start.

  • In a ‘Swansfield 1st’, we’ll be joined in school by a NASA astronaut on Friday. Sycamore, Larch and Rowan friends will have the opportunity to meet Charles Gemar and find out about his experiences. We’ll look forward to sharing news of his visit on class pages.

As always, we have some stars of the week to tell you about. A huge well done to: Emma Hutchins, Tommi Egdell, Damon Leach, Bonnie McHale, Harry Baker, Liv Robson, Melody Croud, Mae Hall, Libby Murdy, William Thomas, Katie Jones, Ellie Walker and Amelia Lauder. We are very proud of you all!

With our special NASA visitor on Friday, it’s an ideal opportunity for some space themed music! Here is Where We’re Going by Hans Zimmer and my question is: What instrument can you hear at the beginning of this piece which then continues throughout? If you know, tell me when you see me and there’ll be smileys and stickers available!
