Head Teacher's Blog 5th February 2024

4th February 2024

It feels good to welcome February in and to see bulbs breaking through. The snowdrops that line the KS1 garden are a daily reminder that spring is on its way!

Thank you to our Y5 families who came along to Fun with Numbers last week. We hope you enjoyed learning alongside your children and seeing how we approach calculation within  the UKS2 curriculum. Mrs Murdy, Miss Ridley and Mr Fordham-Scott appreciated everyone’s hard work and good humour throughout the session! To our Y4 families, there is still time to sign up for this week’s session if you haven’t already done so.

We all enjoyed celebrating National Storytelling Week and there was lots of excitement around the Masked Story-Teller. There were plenty of giggles in classrooms as we all guessed who was reading each day, we hope that you enjoyed watching these at home too. Thanks to Mrs Barrass, Mr Rose, Mrs Horne-Smith and Mrs Smith for being such good sports! Obviously, we’ve got one more reveal to wait for! Thanks also to Miss Back for organising all the fun. The children have enjoyed writing and recording their part of Flotsam during the week and we’ll be sharing this video with you when it’s been perfected!

There was a real buzz in school on Friday when we welcomed Will from Rock Steady to Swansfield. As well as listening to Will perform, the children loved playing instruments and singing to some great rock songs. We will have a Rock Steady tutor in school every Monday afternoon after the half term holiday and as explained in the email on Friday afternoon, the portal to book lessons will open at 4pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Unfortunately, our Y1 children were unable to visit the Playhouse last week due to unforeseen circumstances with the Tutti Frutti theatre company. We hope to reschedule this soon.

Let’s look to the week ahead:

  • It’s Safer Internet Day on Tuesday and we’re pleased to have Judith Davies, Safety Officer with Northumberland County Council coming in to talk with our LKS2 children about keeping safe online.

  • On Wednesday, it’s Rowan class family lunch. We look forward to seeing families at 11.45, please come to the main entrance. If you haven’t already signed up, please do so by Monday afternoon.

  • Larch class are excited to share their class assembly with family and friends on Thursday afternoon. We look forward to seeing everyone at 14.30.

  • We have an UKS2 football team heading to Shilbottle Primary school on Thursday afternoon with Mr Rose. Good luck to the players and we’ll share news of their matches in next week’s blog.

  • You’ll receive a sign up sheet for parent consultations later in the week. Consultations will take place in the two weeks after the half term holiday.

  • Don’t forget to send in your ‘unusual places to read’ photos and remember that there are vouchers to be won! You have until the 16th February to send your photos to Miss Back or Mrs O’Connell. You’ll find their email addresses in the January newsletter.

Here’s our fabulous line up of stars of the week who will be receiving certificates in assemblies next week: Ezra Patten, Olivia Brown, Bella Wall, Elizabeth De La Mothe, Olivia Boutell, Ella Williams, Nico Watson, Danny Phelan, Abigail Wilson, Katy Rogerson, Daniel Casini. Well done, we are proud of you all!

Our music this week is linked to our fabulous Rock Steady experience on Friday. Here is Bon Jovi performing Livin on a Prayer. Look out in the week for a video of Friday’s KS2 band made up of Jack Ellis, Sophie Colgan-McKnight, Lee Philipson, Ella-Rose Clements, Sophia Tutleman, Georgia Short, Jude Graham and Nathan Doherty performing the same number!
