Walk to School Week 15th - 19th May

10th May 2023
This year's Walk to School Week (W2SW) takes place from Monday 15th to Friday 19th May and we have lots planned to encourage and inspire everyone! The activities are built to make pupils experience first-hand the importance of walking to school. Through the various challenges, children will be well on their way to reaching their recommended 60 minutes minimum of physical activity per day. We also know, from the results of our recent travel survey, how important the safety of our children is to everyone and so by reducing the number of cars around school we can create a calmer, cleaner and safer environment for everyone.

The theme of W2SW 2023 is "Walk with Wildlife". This year's challenge encourages children to travel actively to school every day of the week. Meeting various animals along the way, they'll learn about the important reasons to walk and the difference it can make for individuals, communities and the planet!

Every child will get an activity diary detailing the different challenges across the week. We'll keep track of each class's progress with a wallchart in each classroom and daily reward stickers for anyone who has walked (or cycled, or scooted, or used Park and Stride!). Children who complete all 5 daily challenges will get a certificate at the end of the week.

Our Park and Stride initiative is launching during W2SW too. The information that we gathered from the travel survey before the Easter holidays clearly highlighted the issue with parking around our school site. Furthermore, many families expressed their concern over road safety with so many cars in the immediate area surrounding school. We want to encourage those families who have to bring children by car to park a little further away and walk up to school. We encourage parking in the Roxburgh Place car park or the Greenwell Lane car parks. It only takes a few minutes to walk from there up to school and doing so may make your morning commute a much less stressful experience!  I will be at the Roxburgh Place car park entrance at 8.25am each morning next week to greet families with stickers and smileys as a thank you for reducing traffic around our school.

Thank you for your support and encouragement.
