Anti Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day

Apple Class

We've taken some time out this week to consider how lucky we are to have such great friends and how good we are becoming at sharing.

To kick start our week we celebrated being unique and different by wearing odd socks for Odd Socks Day on Monday and we designed our own odd socks too! In Apple class we also made our own washing  line, with lots of pairs of odd socks, hung up. The aim was to find as many pairs of socks from the washing line and to un peg them. This was great fun!

We then went on to reading the story Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson helped us understand how important friendship is and how sad and lonely it can be if we don't share. The story explores how a tiny hermit crab loves his new shell and he doesn't want to share it. But when life in the rock pool proves tougher than crab thinks, he soon finds himself in need of his friends. The children expressed their concerns for 'purple anemone and bristle worm' and then celebrated when they began to share the shell.

The children then discussed how important it is to share and to be kind to others. We discussed all of the kind things we do in Apple class and at home. Our comments are now on display in the classroom - along with our handprints. to demonstrate our 'kind hands, kind feet and kind words' moto.

The children then chose a friend to make a friendship bracelet for.  Each person told their friend exactly why they are special and needed.

"Because you play with me."

"Because you share with me."

"Because we play together at playtime."

"Because you're my best friend."

Apple Class love celebrating friendship!

Other stories we've read this week have been The Rainbow Fish, Mr Big and The Snail and the Whale.
Willow Class

As part of PSHE, Willow class made a 'One Kind Word' display which is up in their classroom. They had a good discussion about respecting each other, thinking before we speak and trying to use kind words only. Each child wrote a kind word on the jigsaw puzzle and it was put together to create this display in class. We also designed our odd socks and this will be going on display very soon with the message 'We are all different'.
