Geography in EYFS

In Early Years, the children spend time exploring the place that they call home.  At Swansfield Park Primary School, we do this through strong home-school links and allowing children to share the places that they go and the people that they meet.

We take opportunities for educational visits to get out and about in our town. When we do this, we talk about the features that we see.  We talk about the purpose of the places that we visit and the jobs and roles of the people that we meet along the way.  We discuss direction and relate this to our school and our homes. For example, when planning a trip to the post office to post our letters to Father Christmas, one child said, "Oh, I know the way to go to get there!  But when you come out of the park, don't go the way to my house, go the other way.  I'll show you when we get there!"

Children in Reception have been learning about the geographical features of the coast and the seaside. The children have taken this learning and made models of rockpools as well as drawings of shells and other natural objects which can be found on the beach.
