Blog week ending 29.4.22

Welcome back!  It's been a great start to the term and lovely to hear everyone's exciting news from the Easter holidays.

This week we've been thinking about the change of seasons and the fact that we are also changing.  We know that we weren't always this big and that we were babies once. This must be the case for animals too. We are very fortunate to have our very own pond which is brimming full of frogspawn and tadpoles! We certainly enjoyed our visit to the pond this week! We thought about the life cycle of a frog and the various stages it must go through before it is a frog- frogspawn, tadpoles, froglets and finally frogs! We made some absolutely fabulous paper plate life cycles and enjoyed scrunching up green tissue paper to make our frogs, and sticking some googly eyes on them. Of course we had to sing 'Five little speckled frogs' this week too! Our focus book this week has been 'The Tadpole's Promise', which has certainly engaged the children (and got us thinking about the number of characters in the book as they went through metamorphosis).  As a class we came up with some brilliant sentences describing the characters in the story and used these in our drawing club this week. Some children are becoming increasingly confident at having a go at spelling words themselves by sounding them out- well done Pears!

Our maths learning this week has seen us develop our confidence in working with numbers to 20. We worked as a team to put numbers 1-20 in the correct order on the carpet and we were brilliant at finding our matching partner in a 'where are you?' game. Some children had a written number, others had a picture representing an amount on a tens frame e.g. 14 dots. The children had to find their corresponding partner and sit down together- great problem solving skills, Pear class! We now know that the '1' in a 'teen number' means that there is 'one ten' in the number. We have used numicon, cubes, counting bears and stones to match an amount to a teen number. We also now know what the word 'estimation' means and we have had lots of fun estimating amounts and seeing how close we were to the actual amount.

In our music session we have started learning a new song (Big Bear Funk).  We listened to this new song and had some interesting discussions about how it made us feel and what we thought about it.  When listening to different songs or pieces of music at home, why don't you chat about what you can hear in it and how it makes you feel?

In PSHE, we have started thinking about relationships and this week we focussed on our families.  It was lovely to hear everybody talk so positively about who is in their family and the different roles everyone plays.  If you want, you could send a photo of your family into school for us to put up on a display of our families.

On Thursday we joined in with the whole school effort at a "Sponsored Silence" for Ukraine.  Pear class were amazing at this!  They tried really hard to stay silent in the afternoon and really wanted to help other children who didn't have the things they need.  Well done everybody!

Have a lovely weekend and see you all next week.
