Internet Safety Day

This week we have enjoyed exploring some topical issues for safer internet day.

We discussed what the word E-Safety means and the kind of things we might use the internet for and how we can keep safe online. It can sometimes be very shocking to discover how many 4 year olds know about Tic Tok and Instagram and how many children play on games not appropriate for their age level.

It was really refreshing to hear from our children this year, that they have not yet discovered social media. We did enjoy talking about how the internet can be used to find out some really interesting things. In Pear Class we use the internet together as a class, to research and discover, but we discussed how the internet should only be used under adult supervision and that certain settings should be programmed so that things that might upset or scare us cannot pop up. We also discussed how online(and in real life) we should never talk to strangers, always tell an adult if we don’t like something, never give out our name or details and always play games for our age ONLY!

We produced our class key safety list about how to stay safe online … we hope you enjoy our video:

Before you click, click, click, you need to think, think, think and tell someone!

As parents, guardians and teachers we play an essential role in supporting children in learning about how to stay safe online. Please find a number of links to provide you with the relevant guidance to help support your child.

As part of Internet Safety day we also enjoyed creating internet safety posters, created our own kindness spells for how we should treat others online and enjoyed using the IPADs in the classroom to play on some age appropriate learning games. We also all had a go at using our classroom computer; using the mouse to log onto the internet to research something that interested us, (whether it be our favourite character from a programme we watch or a fact about an animal that we love). For many children now, parents do not have desktops at home, so there were many children learning about the mouse and the keys for the first time!

A fun and safe time on the internet was had by all!
