Summer 2- 1.7.22

A busy week in Plum class once again....

This week in our maths work we have spent lots of time recapping counting in 2's and 5's as some of us found this tricky last week. We also moved on to counting in 10's. Please continue to practise this regularly whenever you can at home.

We have also enjoyed learning about doubles this week. We wanted the children to confidently explain that doubles means twice as many. Lots of us quickly recognised that when we double we use the same number/amount twice! We had fun playing lots of doubles games. We rolled a dice and made the double using numicon and we even played make my double. This game involved one person choosing a number between 1 and 10 and then quickly making it using loose parts (this was hidden from a friend so they couldn't see which number they were making). After making the number, they quickly showed their friend who had to "make the double". We had lots of fun with this!

In our topic work reception continued to learn about the seaside this week and we had fun testing out materials to see which would make for the best bathing suit (for a dip in the sea). We used the vocabulary absorb, waterproof and repel! We had fun wrapping our barbies in various materials and dunking them in water! Can you ask your child which material was best?

We also enjoyed listening to Debussy's de la mer "The sea". The children enjoyed listening to the music and they thought it was very calm. They said they felt very relaxed afterwards. We also listened to the various instruments being played but lots of us struggled to identify them so we spent some time talking about the sounds of the violin, clarinet and flute.

Year one spent some time revisiting previous learning all about the word landmark. We talked about the various landmarks we would know in Alnwick and talked about why a castle is a landmark. We then had fun drawing our own maps of Alnwick and labelling some important landmarks. The children had lots of fun building various landmarks with loose parts and construction materials!

In our PSHE/Science work this week we have been learning about the life cycle of humans. We began by looking at everyone's childhood photographs you sent in a while ago. We talked about why it was hard to guess which baby photo belonged to which person (because they look so different) and why it is easier to recognise people when they are a bit older. We talked about the changes we go through as humans and reinforced that it is okay to change and we all change at different rates.

As usual the children have been practising handwriting, reading, spelling, big maths (our Friday maths quiz), sports day races and so much more!

Another busy week had by all with another busy week next week...

Tuesday morning year one children will be visiting Alnwick Castle. Please remember to wear sensible footwear and bring a waterproof coat. Don't forget to bring in a packed lunch for our picnic at school when we return. If you have chosen to have a school packed lunch, please ensure you have selected this option on the google form.

Wednesday is roll up day! A chance for the children to visit their new class and meet their new teachers... it is so exciting!!

Have a lovely weekend- Miss F
