Week 7-18.2.22

This week has been a really busy week in plum class as usual and we have lots of tired plum class friends ready for a restful week off.

This week we have been super busy assessing the children in RWI and we are so pleased with how they are progressing. So many children have made huge progress since December. A big well done plum class!

In maths... reception friends have focused on number 9 and 10 with emphasis on how these numbers are made up. We have looked closely at the number bonds to 9 and 10 and the children used numicon and the song "10 green bottles" to help them work out the answers.

Year one are now moving onto adding within 20. This week we have practiced adding by counting on. The children are getting much better at writing number stories down and using a number line to count along to reach an answer.
What a lot of year 1 friends are struggling with is quickly seeing that 3+11=14 is the same as 11+3=14. We will keep practicing this. Have a go at challenging your child at home by asking them quick fire number stories. Can your child then swap the numbers around to make the answer the same.

In our topic work year one have continued to focus on their map work and have been focusing on directional and locational language (forward, backward, left, right, near, next to, beside). We started the week by looking at a compass and the different points. We then had another look at the landmarks on the map and we talked about their location (North, East  South or west). We then went outside with our own compass and thought about the location of various things on our school field. We stood on the playground, looked to the north to see the adventure playground and forest school, looked to the east to see the pirate ship, turned south to see the park and turned to the west to see school. We then drew our findings next to the points of the compass. We then went back to the classroom and had a go at describing the location of these things to our reception friends. For example, the pirate ship is at the bottom of the field next to the big oak tree.

We continued to use our locational and directional language later in the week to move the bee bots around the classroom. We recapped the important vocab: turn, left, right, forward, backward, go, move etc and then had fun playing around with the bee bots.
Reception also joined in with this activity and had a go at making the bee botsove.

This week reception got busy creating their own winter paintings inspired by Wassily Kandinsky.  We had fun colour mixing with the aim to create cold colours  (shades of blue, purple, silver, grey). The children thought carefully about how to lighten colours and change them to darken them or brighten them.

Last week, year one wrote their own instructions to make challah bread as part of our RE topic, passover. This week we followed those instructions and made our own challah loaf. We took turns, carefully measured ingredients, cracked eggs, stirred and kneeded dough. After resting and cooking it tasted delicious!

Later in the week we continued to perfect our handwriting, became performers as we sang our rock song "I wanna play in a band" and practiced moving in different ways in PE.

A busy week had by all. If and when you can, over half term read your new book, acces bug club and numbots and why not download the white rose app 1 minute maths. Its great fun!

Have a restful and enjoyable week and I look forward to seeing you after half term- Miss F
