Week 8: Monday 11th May

Monday 11th May 2020

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to another week of Home Learning. Hope you are all well and had a lovely long weekend. Like last week, I have marked the tasks that I would like to be emailed with @ EMAIL!  and I have also added some further information.

English

Activity 1: @ Email – please email your answers to the reading comprehension. Remember to let me know which star you have chosen to complete.

We are going to move on from looking at writing arguments to looking at information texts. To start this part of the unit we are going to have a look at an information text all about Mars and complete a reading comprehension. The reading comprehension has the usual text to read and then questions to answer, this is attached below. You don’t have to print either of these off, you can just pop your answers onto a piece of paper but remember to write your answers in full sentences! There are 3 different reading comprehensions in the file attached, ranging from 1 star to 3 stars. You will notice that they increase in difficulty. I would like you to challenge yourself and pick which comprehension you would like to complete. There are also answer sheets so you or someone at home can check your answers once you have finished.

Activity 2:

Now that you have had a look at a piece of information text in activity 1, we are going to explore the purpose and the audience of different types of information texts. Remember that purpose means ‘why was it written?’ and the audience is ‘who was it written for?’. I have attached a range of different information texts for you to look at and analyse. I have also included an example of how I would like your answers written. You don’t need to print this off, you can just write your response on a piece of paper.

Activity 3:

I would like you to read for 30 minutes. You could read a fiction story book, a magazine, a recipe book, a non-fiction book, a comic… the list is endless. Once you have completed your reading, pick a task from below to complete:

  •          Create a new front cover for what you have read
  •          Create a wordsearch which includes key vocabulary from your reading
  •          Write a book review
  •          Write a blurb
  •          Create a poster advertising what you have read
  •          Draw an illustration of one of the characters or things from your text
  •          Write a character description
  •          Create a model which relates to what you have read
  •          Write the next chapter of your text

Try to pick a different activity to the one you completed last week! If you have any more suggestions of activities that I could add to the list, please let me know!

Activity 4:

We no longer have access to Frog Play – the frog is officially dead. This week I would like you to explore some of the punctuation and grammar games found on the BBC Bitesize website. I have chosen to focus on verbs, pronouns and adverbs. Here are the links to the tutorials and games:

Activity 5:

Spellings for this week are set below for all 3 groups. Have a go at the 'look, say, cover, write' approach but why not try other ways of learning your spellings. Write them in different colours, in different letter styles ( wobbly, bubble), small letters, big letters or why not time yourself to see how quickly you can write them all or how many times you can write one word in 30 seconds! Get someone at home to test you on your words to see how many you have learnt!

Maths

Activity 1:

The final two lessons on money involve using and applying our knowledge of the four operations to money problems. The first activity is all about adding money. I have attached a set of worksheets for you to complete. Just like the reading comprehension, the sheets range from 1 star to 3 stars – I would like you to choose which one you complete; challenge yourself! Remember when setting out your addition, think about the value of each digit and line up the decimal point. Although this Youtube clip is American and uses dollars instead of pounds, the principles are still the same! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJXLYCxa3u8

Activity 2:

Our last money lesson involves using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and applying them to money problems. There is a PowerPoint below to work through and then a worksheet to complete.

Activity 3:

Please complete one Big Maths sheet. I know that some of you have come to the end of your Big Maths sheets, so I have attached a Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4 Big Maths sheet below. You can choose which sheet you complete – challenge yourself!

Activity 4:

Please complete 2 pages of your Schofield and Sims book.

Activity 5:

Please complete the challenge I have set for you on Timetable Rockstars.

Geography

@EMAIL THIS TO ME SO I CAN SEE YOUR WICKED WATER CYCLES!

The water cycle:

This week we are going to look at the water cycle and how it works. Attached below is a powerpoint for you to look at and perhaps talk through with an adult. You will come across some tricky words such as condensation, evaporation and precipitation. Can you find out what these words mean? The water cycle is well explained on this BBC clip too:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z8qtfg8

I have also attached some worksheets you can print off and fill in if you are able to, but you might want to create and label your own water cycle. That would be much more fun! I've attached some photos to give you an idea of the sort of things you might try.

Good luck with your home learning tasks this week and remember to take lots of breaks and keep smiling! I’m looking forward to seeing your work and giving you feedback on it.

Stay safe Chestnut class and I’ll be touch again soon….
